In some of the large and middle sized law firms in Chicago there is are employees you take documents to the courts, drop off the documents, file them with the court, pick up copies of verdicts, and does other running things for the firm.

Actually the job can be very interesting. I worked for firms where this person would get the document (pleadings, motions, etc.) from the legal secretary, make the correct number of copies, physically take the copies to the right courts and go through the filing process. It provides a real insight into what courts do what, what documents are needed to file a case, and the actual documents.

The problem is the title, it varied by the law firm. Some of the firms called this person a 'legal runner', a 'legal clerk', a 'document clerk', and finally a 'law clerk". If you are sending a resume with a cover letter, you can describe what you could do for the law firm in that cover letter. If you say in that cover letter what you are studying then say how you want to learn about the law, then say you could review documents, make copies, take the documents to the proper courts, and keep up the case files, that may get you this type of job.

So far, doesn't look promising, but you can try for something like mail room. Legal secretarial takes serious skills; paralegals really need to have their degrees to be of real use in most cases. Potentially a receptionist position might exist--depends on your skills. If they're big they might have some purely transcription work for you. If they have the need and you have a legit additional skill, such as being bilingual, that could lead to something.

It's a really interesting and fast paced career!

your best bet is paralegal experience unless you know someone and get referred, or unless you are a cute female and want to work reception based on your looks mostly.
