Hi. I am writing a book. The main character of my story is a lawyer. I was just wondering do the lawyers prepare and file or do the paralegals? Thanks for you help.

There's a broad range. It depends on the lawyer, the law firm, and the paralegal. If it's a routine pleading that the company does all the time, a paralegal will do, hopefully to be gone over by the attorney. If it's something unique, the attorney will give the document some structure or ideas and then turn it over to the paralegal to add it to the routine format for pleadings. If you could give more information about the kind of law involved, I can be more specific. |

They both prepare and file ... but the lawyer has to approve everything and is responsible, so a paralegal can not practice law independently.
A paralegal is more likely to prepare documents that are based on the firm's standard document for a particular use, but the lawyer would still review, sign, and take full responsibility. |
