It's a difficult position to be it. Since customers are transient, there really isn't a lot the manager can do unless he's there at the moment and is willing to forgo the business and tell the customer to leave. But often, depending on the nature of the business, the person in reception just needs to have a thicker skin. People at the DMV, car impounds, and the like are just going to be angry and likely abusive.
I was a secretary at a company and would field complaint calls that were sent to my boss, the senior vice president. Many were angry and unable to behave decently, and I was told I could hang up on them. Similarly, perhaps the manager could empower the receptionist to ask abusive people to leave, or have someone she should call in such cases who has more authority who will intervene and perhaps ask the customer to leave.
You cannot control another person's behavior who is not in your employ, but you can control your reaction it. |
