Im in my twenties and want to go to school to get a degree under my belt. I've worked as an administrative assistant for almost 6 yrs and i need something else...Im thinking of becoming a paralegal since its SORT of similar to what I do. What type of schooling is necessary? I dont want to be in a full time program that will take me forever because I have two small kids at home and work full time....Do i need a bachelors? Or is an associates fine? Certification?

If you want to be a paralegal, you HAVE to be willing to take a low-paying entry level job and work your way up. Without experience, you will probably not find a job. The second most important thing is getting a degree-an associates is fine-from an ABA-approved school. Plan to spend at least two years in the program. This is NOT a simple, short program. If you do not go to an approved school, you will be seriously limiting your job opportunities. Do not pick a short/online/distance school, as employers do not like those.
I have a liberal arts BA with high honors. I could not find a career with my degree, so I am in an approved paralegal program. Even with the BA and high level office experience, firms will not hire. They want at least 2 years of law firm experience and most now want the approved degree.
If you want to be a paralegal, get an entry-level job in a law firm. As you work your way up, go to school. That is the only way you will really have any job opportunities. Check out your local community colleges to see if they are approved. I wish I had done it this way; I just started my program and I am looking for entry jobs so I have the experience. My prof even admitted that we need to find jobs now, or we will have to start at the bottom when we graduate. Btw, my program is very involved, requires field work and research. You can go pt or ft (which makes it hard to work in a firm)-it is 67 credits for an Associates. |
