What kind of Q's can they ask, I heard they can't ask anything that would be illegal like... defamation of character...
Can they ask about tardiness, or what the boss thought of you or... things like that.

in the US they can ask and answer any questions.
as long as the answer is believed to be true the employer can not be charged with defamation by a former employee.
yes they can ask about tardiness, job performance, disciplinary actions, employment dates etcetera........
it is only defamation when someone knowingly lies about you, just because what they say is bad does not make it defamation..... |

any thing they want as long as it is the truth, there may be some that decline to answer, but there is no law preventing any employer from giving truthful references |

they can ask whatevery they want but most employers are unlikely to say anything negative for fear of lawsuits, most will only confirm employment dates, if they talk directly to your boss that person may say more but usually if they liked you they say nice things and if they didn't they say very little. |
