What to do when your former boss is out of line?

What to do when your former boss is out of line?

I had worked for a couple of years at this job that I loved. All i had been told all along is what a great job I had been doing and how much she appreciated me.
Well, we had our yearly event and during this event numerous people made comments to me regarding my bosses and her boyfriends drug use. I kept this to myself until she returned to work a week and ahalf later, (she was tired from the event) i took her aside and told her I needed to talk to her as a friend and told her what was said to me. Lo and behold 4 days later she fired me. She informed me that she couldnt trust me.
Well ok, on to bigger and better things. Only now she is calling city officals and every group I belong to and telling them that i had been fired because i was abusive. This is so bizarre its almost comical as I am one of those too nice people.
She has also given me really bad references.
My question is, is there a law in Colorado that prohibits a former emplyer from giving bad references? Do i have any recourse?
Additional Details
She even went so far as to open personal mail and give it to my husband in hopes of getting me into trouble with him.

If the references she is giving out are not factual, you have grounds for a law suit. Libel or slander also comes to mind. Get a consultation with an attorney and try to nip this in the bud (a cease and desist letter on attorney letterhead might be all you need).

I can tell you in California that unless a party is asked specifically about how you worked they are not permitted to arbitrarily to call a prospective employer and give you a bad review.

Also if the review is untruthful and malicious you could have a cause of action for slander (defamation by speech).

Check with your local legal aid.

Good luck.
