There are lawyers who work through the state for the low income. It is call legal-aid. I do believe that there are attorney's that work for non-profit organizations, I think what they do is "donate" their time for a tax write off.

There are TONS of jobs like this for lawyers. Yes, there is legal aid and the public defender's office. However, there are many other options, too. For example, large non-profits like Habitat for Humanity hire lawyers. In some cities, there are law firms that represent just the homeless. You can represent law income parents in abuse and neglect cases (where I live, this is court appointed work). The list goes on and on.
