What would you do if this was you?

Hi Folks,
Here'd the deal: Last year I started at a community college with a physical therapy major. I did this with the intent to apply to the physical therapist assistant program. Over the course of the past two semesters, I have done very well in my ocurses and have only 2 more courses left to go (I will take 1 this summer and the other inthe fall) before I will be able to apply to the program. My advisor thinks that I stand a good chance of being accepted because I have good grades. If I am accepted into the program and am able to graduate, I should be able to find a job and make a modest to decent living ($35-$40k.) The only problem is that I really want to get a double undergraduate major in philosophy and ethics and then go on to law school and beome a lawyer or a law professor. I really enjoy the mental gymnastics that philosphy and law put me through. Being a lawyer or professor has always been a dream of mine. After doing several hours of observation as a physical therapy intern, I think that I would find the job less than enjoyable because it does not pique my interest or give me the ability of self-exoression as much as the option I stated earlier might. My professors tell me I am very intellectually gifted (Yeah, right) and would excel as a philosophy major and in law school. They say that I should put the pt thing on the back burner as something that I could always come back to if I get tired of academia or the legal profession. On the other hand, would I be giving up the possibility of job security and a decent income if I did this? Is this pragmatic to do in our lousy economic times? I have thought about getting the associate's PT degree and then going on from there, but I don't see how I would be able to work and keep abreast of my knowledge and the happenings in the physical therapy field and do well in rigorous academics at the same time. What do you guys think? What should I do? (Sorry that this was rather long. Thanks for readingm though.)

Go with your passion. Do what you love, the money will follow. (And I know your question did not really have to do with money). From your question, I can see that you have a passion for law, philosophy and ethics. I'd go for it! Purchase books on law, philosophy and ethics, even business ethics! You can't go wrong with these three things.
Hopefully you are young. I just found my passion in Adult Autism and Asperger Syndrome and how having that relates to adults trying to get meaningful jobs and Human Resources. I'm 33 years old and I just found my passion this year! I wish I would have discovered this 10 years ago, I would have skipped bible college had I known this!
Don't think "What will happen if I go into ethics or law and I can't get a job?" When you are in it, people can see it and people will see that you are REAL. That is the key and that is what people want-people want to see people being real.
You may have had an interest in pt years ago and that's okay. For now, follow your passion. If your passion changes in 10 years from now (after you have worked in a law firm or your own), then you can always go back to being a pt.
(I'm not sure if you'd like to earn more than 40K a year, but lawyers do earn more than 40K a year-and 40K a year is nothing for a family of 3-I'm shooting for at least 80K a year). |

go for what you are compassionate about. if you want to be happy and satisfied for the rest of your working days drop the pt stuff and keep going on the other track. dont sell yourself short. and dont worry, the economy will turn around eventually. think positive, besides, we need you to use your brains where they can do the best work in the world. |

I don't think anyone can tell you what will be best for you. But have you tried making a list of the pros and cons of each situation. You have in a way done this here but if you make a proper list and give a weighting to each item it might help you make a decision. |

Easy - physiotherapist. Trust me, you'll mix with much better people and feel more fulfilled.
Our boy needs constant physio and his therapist seems to get as much out of it as he does.
Complete and utter selflessness is the only way to be happy. |

Both professions are way overcrowded. And I do mean way! So your choice has to be based on how you prefer to starve.
There are safe, secure jobs in both professions, but you have to be in the right place at the right time to get them. In law, it helps an enormous amount if you have connections. If your family doesn't have connections, maybe your professors can help. |
