Whats it like being a lawyer?

Whats an average work day in a lawyers life look like? I'm thinking more like trial lawyers, but any one else who has experience would also be helpful.

It depends on the type of law you practice as well as type of employer (small firm, big firm, government, public interest, a corporation, etc.)
I've been practicing law for two years, and have worked at two different small firms. In my first job, I practiced juvenile law, representing the state in child abuse and neglect cases (not criminal). My state contracts with private firms for this work. I typically worked 40 hours a week, with a very occasional 50 hour week if I had a big hearing coming up. Juvenile law is very fast paced with a lot of time in court, with a probable cause hearing that happens almost immediately after a child is removed from the home, an adjudication hearing usually within two weeks after that, and then review hearings every three months. I was in court about three days a week.
I now practice family law, and do just a tiny bit of court appointed juvenile work (representing the parents now rather than the state.) I work 40 hours a week with a rare late evening. The majority of my time is spent trying to negotiate settlements. Almost everything settles, so I'm only in court maybe once every six to eight weeks. For the juvenile work, I'm usually in court once a week. I also spend a lot of time with discovery, which is pretty boring. We request documents from the other party and send a list of questions to the other party for them to provide a written response. Then I spend a great deal of time sorting through the documents they send, trying to get missing info from the other side, and organizing the info to help prepare for settlement negotiations or an eventual hearing.
I love what I do. Practicing at a small firm gives me a great quality of life. There are times when I'm stressed out over a case, but overall my job is pretty low stress. However, the sacrifice I make by working at a small firm is that I have a pretty low salary. I could make twice as much (and work twice as many hours) at a larger firm.

It's HELL!!! A lot of stress, BS and long hours during trial. You will not have a life outside of work, because even when you are off...the stress and phone calls continue. |
