The medical profession dominates the top end of the list of the 25 best paying careers in America. Anesthesiologist are No. 1, with the next seven spots taken by various sorts of specialist practitioners. Chief executives, at No. 9, and airline pilots, at No. 13, are the only two non-medical occupations in the top 15. The only other non-medical profession in the top 20 is attorneys at No.16.
this is the list of careers, the 30 highest paying JOBS are all CEOs of major corporations but the average for all CEOs is at No. 9 |

But seriously.....
Warning: DON'T go into the field of Law. Jobs are REALLY drying up here!!!! (bad economy, plus thanks to the web everyone thinks they can be their own attorney, also law office environments = VERY political)
Go into the field of healthcare <LOTS of jobs there!! |

Lawyers don't actually top the list of being paid the highest.
Don't be fooled by what biglaw salary may indicate.
Only if you go to a top 10 law school and do above average will you get a high paying biglaw job. If you end up in a second tier law school, make sure you're in the top 10% of your class and make law review. It may sound easy but people in second or third tier law schools are ultra competitive. Face it, there are just too many lawyers and not enough positions left. I would say only about 10% of law school grads from my state 2nd tier law school found a job that pays anything above $100/k year. The rest couldn't find employment, had to do temp contract review with no benefits for $30 an hour (even after 5 years of graduation), work for the public sector at $35k/yr, work for solo practitioners or very small law offices with lots of work for $50k/yr, or become non-lawyers such as Lexis/Westlaw rep's or compliance analyst.
Even if you're the cream of the crop and get a biglaw job right out of law school that pays $160k, you must think about the hourly rage. Most of these folks must bill 2000-2500 hours per year, which means you must physically be in the office and working most of your life, with 4 hours of sleep max. It comes out to less than a McDonald's burger flipper's wage.
If you're becoming a lawyer just for the money, I say you forget it. You're in for a major disappointment & misery.
Check out: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocoipq.htm#P. The job outlook for lawyers is dim according to the Dept. of U.S. Labor Bureau. As someone said earlier, if you want to make lots of money, have prestige, you've got the brains and you don't mind working like a dog, you might want to consider a career in medicine instead, such as "ROAD" to happiness (radiology, opthamology, anesthesiology, dermatology). Far better benefits, job security, starting salary (after residency) and prestige. The only downside is you've gotta work like a dog.
I-banking & stock trading also come to mind. I know no lawyers who retire at 45. But I know a lot of i-bankers & options trader who do. |
