When does a law student become a lawyer?

Do you become a lawyer after you graduate law school or after you pass the bar?

You have to also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) - aka ethics, the moral character evaluation, and the bar exam after completing law school and obtaining your Juris Doctor. All three of these cost money, although the moral character evaluation may be a bit pricier than the bar exam (you need to provide fingerprints for them to check the DOJ with).

If you never pass the exam and/or ever become licensed to practice law, you can still put the J.D. after your name after graduating from law school.

You become a lawyer after you get your license which means graduating, passing the bar, paying the fee, and being accepted by the state licensing board.

After you pass the bar.....ONLY.

When you graduate, all you have is a law degree, but you can't legally call yourself one until you pass the bar.
