When is it right to give an ultimatum to your prospective employer for not giving definite date of employment?

My propspective employer gave me a job offer, which i accepted. I met him already personally, and said he is just fixing the employment pass. Several weeks passed, and still no date set as to when we will begin our professional collaboration, although he said, "very soon"... I have declined previous offers, and I can't move on with my life, because of this job which I do like, but takes forever to start. When is it right to give him an ultimatum?

I am not sure that an ultimatum is what you want to give, but I definitely understand your concern.

Maybe you should try calling the employer and saying a little something like this:

"Hi, Bill. This is Bob. I was calling to follow up on our last conversation about setting a start date for me. I know that you said that I'll be starting very soon, but I was wondering if we can iron out a date. I'm available to start Monday. Is that too soon for you? What about Tuesday? I'm just so excited about this opportunity. So much so that I've turned down some other offers since being offered the position with your company. Should I continue to wait, or would you recommend some other course of action in the interim?"

You may also go ahead and accept another job and leave if the one you're waiting on is so much better (whenever a definitive start date comes).

It happened to me, but even worst I showed up the next day and she said she never told me to come in. I was upset and I did demand an explanation and I told her that I will look for another job if it is taking this long. The next day they called me and they said that they don't have the funds but they need me. So they will call me when all is settled. It's been a while but I already submitted my paperwork. I am going to that job but if I see that I am not happy I already have another job on hold that they are ready when I am ready. I told them what I did and they said that if they do not start me off to call them and go with them. Just talk to both jobs and always keep yourself open to other jobs. Always have a plan in-case things don't go the way you wish. It sounds that they are not doing much, so call them and tell them exactly how you feel. Tell them that they said they wanted you but if they don't start you off you are moving on. Just make sure you do it and when you do you have another job on hold. That is my advice. Good Luck.

I suggest you start looking at other job opportunities. There might be problems in the company, hence the delay. You should talk to your prospective employer again about the job offer and the ask for a specific date when you can start. If he does not give you a specific date all the more reason you should look elsewhere. You can say that you need to know for financial reasons. There is nothing wrong with accepting another job offer if it is better and you feel you need a job right away.

Give a disguised ultimatum. say you have another offer and you need for this employer to give you a definite starting date.
