When should I let a potential employer know about my misdemeanor? During the 1st interview or before it?

I want to be honest and upfront about my misdemeanor from 3 yrs ago but don't know when it would be a good time to bring it up?

Speaking from personal advice, honesty is best policy. Most applications have a section for such information. Tell them then. If an application does not apply, see how the interview goes. Sell yourself for the position, if mention of a background check~~that would be your que to bring it up. Good Luck!

If they don't ask and there's nothing on the application I wouldn't bring it up. If they do ask I'd be as honest as possible without going into any more detail than necessary.

After all, it was only a misdemeanor, it's not like you robbed a bank or murdered someone and you're not the first person in history to get one.

Wait for them to bring it up, but have an answer prepared so that you don't look like you are trying to hide anything

?
It depends on what you did.
Stealing and applying to handle money?
Flashing when applying to tend children?
Wreckless driving and applying to be a driver?

If you don't recall it until asked in person or on the application, then you don't need to say anything.

I don't even believe they check for misdemeanors. I was recently sent a copy of the criminal background check that a potential employer did ran on me and no misdemeanor was listed on the results of the check. I believe the application only ask you to let them know about any felony's. (They all vary) However, if it does ask, do tell the truth on the application and during the interview you can explain yourself. Everyone changes and needs not be judged on that particular time in their life. Ask them to check your other references and previous employers to find out more positive things about yourself. But if they don't ask, don't tell. Just make sure of what the application is asking you to answer about your background.
I do know that on the copy of the background check they sent to me there was a place where the check ask the employer if the applicant did admit his/her felony or did they lie.

When/if they tell you they are doing a criminal background check. If they do that, you need to prepare them.

I would not mention it if that does not happen, unless they ask on the application. Then you just fill that in.
