You might not have a choice. I have always had to sign the contract when I accepted the job.
I agree about the lawyer - I have had contracts that were obviously drawn up by the company lawyers in legalize. When I brought them to my lawyer he pointed out a number of things I didn't see as important, that were.
But employment lawyers can be pretty expensive (depends on the contract, the number of changes and likely where you are, but I think I paid close to $1,500.00).
One point the lawyer made that I think is very valid is that where there is ambiguity, you and your manager might discuss it, but, if it becomes an issue and goes before a judge, you never know the how the judge will rule. |

It would be prudent to wait to sign the contract. You want to be fully aware of your rights under it and what rights you waive when you sign it. In some cases and in high-profile positions, you may need an attorney to negotiate on your behalf. |
