The range of starting salary for a lawyer can be from $30,000 to $130000 a year. Those who get the $130,000 are usually the ones who finished in the top 5 percent of the class at a top 20 law school. Competition is intense for those jobs and hiring ordinarily beings after the second year of law school.
Many law graduates struggle to find $40-50k a year jobs. It's just the reality of the market with the shortage of legal jobs. If money is what you're really after, go for a career in health care or start a business. Don't go down the career pathway of law with the intention of being rich. You'll find a lot more disappointment and misery that way. |

It really depends on what state and city you live in as well as who you're primary customers are. In Seattle, Washington, for example, the average attorney makes about $47 per hour. On the lower end of that scale there are attorney's that make only about $16 per hour and $63 on the higher. In Hollywood, California an attorney could expect between $33 and $62 per hour. Not so much change on the higher end, but a lot in the lower.
As to what kind of attorney's make the most; this is not a simple answer and is also mitigated by where you live. You will find the opportunity to make a considerable amount of money in any field of law, provided that you choose to practice in an area that has a healthy supply of wealthy customers who need your expertise. Using the above example, in Seattle where many corporate giants such as Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon.com, and Starbucks have their bases you'll find ample work as a high paid corporate lawyer. On the other hand in Hollywood you might find better financial success as a criminal defense attorney.
Personally, I would go the corporate route. I say this because once you are in with an organization like Microsoft you'll always have a paycheck coming in. Most criminal defense attorney's (and I choose criminal defense lawyers because prosocuters work for the government so they can't negotiate their salaries) make a decent living, but 99%+ of your clients will be regular people who won't be able to pay the higher salaries. It typically takes many years to gain the reputation needed to be a "go to" lawyer for the stars. Johnnie Cochran was 54 before he got his first big paycheck defending Michael Jackson against charges of child molestation. Do you really want to wait 30 years after getting your degree to start bringing in the big bucks? Even then, criminal attorneys typically have the biggest leeway in regards to wages. You may land a large case but under the condition that you only get paid if you win. Additionally, most states require defense attorneys to provide a certain amount of free or inexpensive work to select clients in order to maintain their license to practice (this is the whole "if you can't afford an attorney one will be provided for you" thing from your Miranda rights).
So look carefully at the different aspects of law. Some will provide a good living but you'll never be one of the top earners. Others will provide the opportunity for great rewards, but carry great risks with them as well. |

High profile criminal defense lawyers, such as OJ Simpson's attorneys.
They don't bill, they just tell you to sign the check and they fill in the amount. They go for about $ 1000,00 an hour, plus expenses.
Also, malpractive attorneys, who get multi million dollar awards, and take 1/3 as their fee.
The run of the mill neighborhood attorney who handles wills, estates, trafiic fines, etc, goes for about $ 200.00 an hour, expenses.
