I started working at a department store 1 year ago. My friend Stella was hired at the same place in the same department exactly one week before me. But since then, she has been away on sick leave many times, sometimes for months at a time, and in all, she's only worked about a quarter of the hours I've put in this past year. BUT there's an opening in a new department which is supposed to go to whoever has more seniority. Would that technically be Stella, or would her long absences (she was gone once for 6 months!) have any effect on that?

Generally, the person with seniority would get it, but they also take your work record into account and her absences will likely reflect negatively upon her. Since there is such a short period of time between when she started and when you did, I'd say you have a pretty good shot at getting the job :)
Also, because it is a department store and they probably have a high employee turnover, the week may not even count as seniority (they may consider it as the two of you being hired at the same time). When I worked in retail, "seniority" was considered at least a month because we often had a few people hired over the course of several weeks. |

The person who is hired first technically has seniority, so that would be Stella. ..but it is possible that her absences may override her seniority. In any case it is up to the boss who is going to get transferred. If you want to know if you have a chance at the opening talk to your boss about it. |
