Who is currently attending or attended law school?

If so, what is it like? where do you attend?how was your first day? were you scared or confident? is it really that hard? I mean I know it's hard but many people like to exaggerate bunches and say that its so not worth it and too much reading and this and that. it really discourages me. I want to attend law school to specialize in family law because that's want I care about. the family. I want to help people adopt children and all those things. also the divorces seem interesting to hear new stories and crazy cases.
thanks!

It is very difficult and time consuming and the other posters are correct in that it is very hard to find work as a lawyer right now.

A typical week will include 300-450 pages of reading (I might add that it is very difficult reading that you must be prepared to discuss in class) Usually it takes about one hour to read 10 pages when you first begin law school (eg it is about 30-45 hours of reading plus class time).

If you are truly only interested in the familiy you may want to rethink law school and pursue a career in social work. Most law schools only offer a few family law courses and about 40 of your 88 required credits will be consumed by required courses that have no relation to family law (Contracts, civil procedure, property, torts, etc)

It's not hard. It's time consuming. It's expensive. Jobs are hard to find and they pay poorly. There are far too many lawyers.

Get a job in a law firm before you make any decisions. See the reality of the jobfrom the inside. It sounds like you watch too much tv.

Management Mom
Hey Outsider:

Maxmom is right. There are far too many lawyers. While "Family" law has many facets, a divorce practice can also be dangerous due to hostile ex-spouses. New lawyers aren't skilled to handle the complicated, juicy cases at the beginning any way.

Adoptions are noble, but also requires lots of experience and contacts in that arena. The idea of working in a law firm of this type, is good advice.

Do an internet search on firms in your area that focus on adoptions and divorces, or even surrogate mothers. Spend a year as a clerk, and then decide if you want to pursue your J.D. degree in that field. You may find that your talents are better used as a social worker, or child advocate.

People become lawyers because they thrive on the searching and finding of facts to support their cases. It is a never ending problem solving process, and the one thing that law school (at USC) developed in me, was the skill to learn anything through complete research and investigation. Then present viable solutions to the issues plaguing the participants.

Good luck.

"MaxMom56" is right on - we have WAY TOO MANY lawyers right now.
Even IF you did make it through law school, you probably won't be able to find a job. But the law schools WON'T tell you this - law students are easy money for them.

Suggestion: Go into the field of Healthcare!!! <<< LOTS of jobs there! and scholarships!

Good luck.
