Why Do Law Schools Have Such Easy Admissions Standards?
|
I went to a get together with my wife's family. One of the kids was applying to law school. He told me he got a 143 on the LSAT, law entrance exam, he said it was a pretty good score, which placed him in like the bottom 40%. He was annoying me too because he was smacking his food. I got a 171 and scored in the 98th percentile. I do not think his grades were that great either. Why don't law schools have standards like med or dental schools. It seems like any retard can become a lawyer.

In my not so humble opinion, two reasons.
1. Law schools are uber expensive! If a stupid kid can come up with the cash, or the loans, they are more than happy to steal their money. Just like the Computer Institutes, Medical Institutes, University of Phoenix. It isn't about the education or preparing someone for a career, it is 100% about the cold hard cash. Education is big business, with the guise of doing good.
2. Law schools know the truth, but definitely don't tell applicants & students: the majority of graduates never pass the bar AND nearly 70% of graduates NEVER work in the legal field. EVER. If you search the internet you will read thousands of stories of people who are $100,000 or more in debt, graduated in the top 10% of their class and passed the bar making $40k a year as an admin for a company, or even less as a paralegal at a big firm. Now realize that with the 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Act you cannot file bankruptcy on these loans even if you NEVER get a job giving you the ability to pay.
So, if my paycheck (and don't kid yourself, admissions counselors JOBS) depended on convincing the witless to drop tens of thousands of dollars, I would let the kid in too. Which is probably why I would never get hired as an admissions counselor.
Reality, and what colleges tell you, are two utterly different things.
my source - school of hard knocks and the real world. |

They don't have standards like med or dental, but they have a wide raneg of acceptance criteron for each schools. That is why there are different tiers. Also, 143 is low, and he may not have been admitted to an ABA law school.
You can see the stats of all ABA law schools at the link below. |

Was this person actually ACCEPTED into a law school? It sounds as if he was simply bragging about APPLYING. Contrary to some of the other answers, law schools are typically very selective.
In order to obtain, and retain, accreditation by the American Bar Association they have to meet certain standards, including state bar passage rates. Most states require that you attend an ABA-accredited law school before they will even let you sit for a bar exam. Law schools look at a number of factors, which do not include an applicant's or an applicant's family's income, when deciding on who to accept. These factors include college attended, college GPA, LSAT scores, past work experience, past activities, and extracurriculars, etc. |
