Why do some job postings in the news paper say "Confidential" under "company name"?

Is it a scam?

1. To keep headhunters from contacting you.

2. To avoid resumes from people who are not qualified for the position you are advertising for but they want to submit it to you anyways.

3. Sometimes this is done by headhunters and employment agencies to get resumes of people. (the job does not exist) Then they call up the candidates, bring them in for testing, interviewing and tell you "the company really wants someone with more ( ) experience but we'll see if we can find another job that better suits your background.

4. This technique is done by companies who want to gather up people for mass interviews for selling their products - water purification units, Amway, financial consulting.

The top reasons:

The economy is tanking and posting a want ad can mean thousands of resumes and phone calls and even people showing up at your offices. Most businesses just cannot afford to deal with all these people. Not to mention that every recruiter from Maine to California will be on the phone offering to send you Monster resumes. Why bother, keep the yahoos to a minimum.

Or, they are replacing a current bad employee and don't want them to find out that they are getting canned. I used to do this all the time.

Third reason is that it is a recruiter who doesn't have a real job posting, but thinks if they find the world's best candidate that they can make a match and make some money. Not as often though.

sometimes its done by companies just to see if any of their own employees will respond. If they do get a resume from their own employee, then that employee may be fired.
