Why does anyone want to study law and pursue a career?

For the money.....

Why does anyone want to be a chef or study medicine? Or do anything?

Yes, some people do it for the money. Some people also go to the Caribbean for medical school for the money. And prestige.

Most of my fellow attorneys, and I, do it because we enjoy it. Some of us go to court and litigate but there's a lot more than just that. Truly, there's a lot of different aspects to law that appeal to wide range of people--that has nothing to do with money or prestige/status. Most attorneys don't earn as much as you think. The average first year salary is around the 50s'--that's 3 years of grad school and 4 years college for 50k. Compare that with an electrical engineer's average first year in the 60s--that's only 4 years college. More often than not, around year 3, those who were only in it for the money move onto something else. The rest of us are here to help people navigate the American justice system, settle disputes civilly, conduct their business locally, nationally and/or globally, help the innocent victims of crime and torts, and punish the guilty. Because we care and like doing what we do and contributing to a better more civilised society.

There are a range of careers in law. Most people who study law do not spend their time going to courts and advocating before the bench.

They right contracts, provide advice to companies on how to reduce their tax burden etc etc.

In actually law practicies there is a very high drop out rate amongst interns and new employees.

Many people start for the money, but in the end they become interested in law because it is an exciting area of work (for them at least).

I know lawyers (not even high paid lawyers) who take time away from their job, and still find themselves exchanging emails with their colleagues and following legal cases that they were involved in.

In addition, not everyone makes a good lawyer. Many people have low paying legal practices because they are basically not that good at what they do.

You could ask that question about any career. Those that study law normally have a passion of helping others and fighting for what is right and wrong in our society. There are so many different fields of law that we pursue: family law, criminal law, tax law, entertainment law, federal law, real estate law, etc. I think it is a very rewarding and prestigious career to know that you have helped a victim or stood up for someone and to be the voice of those to afraid to speak for themselves.
