prior manager give a reference? They have a strict policy that says only HR can give any information. Additional Details There weren't problems and I certainly wasn't singled out unless the 40 others let go that same day were singled out as well!!

Many companies are afraid of being sued in the event that a manager/supervisor gives a bad reference and/or accidentally says something that's technically illegal.
Therefore, the company takes the safe road and says that only HR can give out information. The HR people are trained about what they can and can't say about former employees. Typically they limit it to the black and white facts, such as dates of employment, positions held, etc. This way they can't get in legal trouble, because everything they say is a documented fact. |

Then perhaps they should make the number for HR available for you guys to use for that purpose. You employer may just be trying to keep you down. The managers of the world today are vicious and cold. They didn't get where they are because they were nice. Liars. That's how they got there. Technically they are not allowed to give you a bad reference. But, the laws were made to protect them not you. They have lawyers. But I would just be honest with new employer and let them know that there were problems. They may overlook the issue and move on to the next reference. |

Most companies do not give out references, they just verify employment and that is correct HR would be the one to do the verification not the supervisors or managers. Reason being is that the compoany does not want to be responsible for supervisors or manager giving incorrect information. |

Because the company can get sued. If your old manager gave you a really bad recommendation and you found out about it, you could file a suit for hindrance of employment. Also if the manager gave you a glowing recommendation and you did something to the new company the company could sue the old company for false representation. Your old company does not want your old manager to act as an agent for them in this matter. Only HR. |

It sounds like they're trying to hide behind the fact that "only HR can give any information". Were they upset with you for any reason when you left...and now maybe they are getting a little revenge by refusing to give you a reference? Or are they interested in keeping you in line to return to your job when they can afford to have you back on? I think these are really the only 2 reasons a former employer wouldn't give you a reference. |
