Will I get fired for giving too much change?

Today at the end of work, we were around 10 dollars under on one register and around 1 dollar above on another. I don't believe I did the mistake, but say that I did give too much change on one transaction and too little change on another, will this get me fired? The total loss was around 10ish.

Are you the only one on these registers, or are there several people on each?
If say for instance there are 3 people on each register, then any of the 3 could have overpaid or underpaid the customers. Or, in the course of a day, one could overpay 50 cents here and 10 cents another time, that in the course of 8 hours could total $10 or $1. Some people are diligent in properly counting out change, while others just hand it back and not count it back.
So if multiple people on registers, then they cannot determine who actually was responsible or if all of you together are responsible. Just because 1 person can state, I have never been short/over is not a defense since we all make mistakes.
Have they told you to be careful or wrote you up? Most employers will state if happens again, you are gone or give you warning.

Technically, the could fire you, but if you are otherwise a good worker,they won't fire you. This kind of thing happens from time to time. Just be more careful and try not to let it happen again. |
