Will lack of references ruin my chances of getting hired?

currently work for a public sector and I am trying to gain employment with another agency within the state government system that is a step higher than the position that I have now. The interview went really well and the employer immediately tried to make contact with my current boss. I have no problem with that, it is just that he is never in the office and being his secretary I know that this prospective employer called several times trying to get a reference. He called my home and asked for two more "business references" because my boss is so hard to get in contact with. One of the references I gave him was a person I work with.

I really want this job because it is more money and a better opportunity for future advancement. Do you think that my boss, a careless ninny, who barely comes to work will hurt my chances of getting this job? He never is available to even give me a reference. I mean this guy has already contacted two references .... why can't he just hire me.

At least you know that you're being considered for the new job. The secretary will pass the message to your current boss and he'll follow up with your reference..

How about having your current manager write you up a recommendation on LinkedIn.com? Then either link with the hiring manager or send him/her the link to your profile.
