Felony Charges. I was reading some of the answers you have got and I can tell you this for sure, where I work when we do a background check you fill out a form and it is faxed off to state, when it comes back it is either no records found or they find some kind of criminal charges. Some employers can do a credit check on you but we don't even do that. We have never called anyones neighbors or friends or anything like that, that is preposterous. |

A lot depends on the position you are applying for. If it is law enforcement, any prior convictions will eliminate you. Also, most state agencies check your credit rating, they don't want you open to bribes. Several agencies will conduct a "home visit" in which they stop by your residence unannounced to see how you actually live.
Things that eliminate you are felonies, alcoholism, drug abuse, lying on your application, etc. |

Lying on your resume (about both the place and time of employment), any questions on the application like "have you ever committed a felony", drug arrests.
Some state agencies also do a creidt check, if you'll be dealing with a lot of money. |

Any criminal conviction will disqualify you from working around children. Bad credit would disqualify you from working in a financial area. Drunk driving convictions would disqualify you from being any kind of driver like a bus driver. It is ultimatly up to the discretion of the hiring agency whether to hire you based on a background check or not |

felony arrests, convictions, dui, domestic violence, poor work duration history, poor grammer on your resume |

They will look for a criminal record and/or fraud. They may want a physical as well, but probably not. Some companies want physical checks to make sure their employee won't die on them super-fast and/or drugs. But when they want a background check it is for criminal and financial-fraud reasons. That is all. |

Typically an employer is looking for any felony convictions, verify you attended the schools you claim to have, verify your degree (if you state that you have one), verify the dates of employment and did you hold the positions you claim to have held. They are going to verify the information you give them on your resume and job application is accurate and truthful.
If you are applying for anything handling money then they would look at credit - to see if you have been in trouble with that area. Some employers will check credit history, not to see what your credit rating is but to see if you have multiple garnishments or judgements against you. This is going to mean extra work for their payroll and accounting departments, plus you may need time off to take care of these issues. |

prior convicitons....
mostly felony, DUI, etc
They will ask your neighbors about your behavior...like if you have late night activities, or people coming and going at odd hours..
who you live with--If you live with the head of the Hell's Angels..I think they might pass you up
I work for the DA's office ...and they routinely CALL your neighbors and inquire....about what you do..
When I was investigated for a 911 operator they actually went out in person and talked to my x-landlord, after having been gone from that place for 2 years!
Just because it ~seems~ unheard of, doesn't make it FALSE.
I live in Calif so perhaps other states are more lax. |
