Would this be breaking the law?
Find answers to your legal question.

Would this be breaking the law?

I had the idea to compose a book about other books. Essentially it would be a guide to a certain type of self help books. Would that break any sort of copyrights or infringe any rights or laws?
Additional Details
I would not be committing libel or slander. I would simply be stating the title, author, and other important information about the book, along with a brief explanation. No personal opinion involved.

if you have in mind a compilation of book reviews about self-help books and you do not intend to quote liberally from these books without permission; then you would not be violating any copyright law. My suggestion if you plan to market this book is to consult with your publisher as they will usually advise you about any legal problems your book might have.

I would probably strongly consider contacting the publishers and authors of these books to get their approval. I mean you can go ahead and write the book. Just dont go publishing it. Or selling it. And be prepared to remove some of the books in case you do not get the A-Okay

Legal minefield.
Be careful what you say in print.

It looks like you would be advertising their book in your book and you may have to get permission from the author before you can do that. But I do not see why they would say no.

Would you have to get permission to mention other books? I'm not sure, but I would check into it if you are serious.

Why are you making a book talking about what other people have already written...that sounds pretty unoriginal. You would at the very LEAST have to list your sources, AND possibly get the author or publisher's permission to even refer to them in print.

This sounds crazy that you are writing a self-help book about self-help books.

not really as long as u talk to the copyrighted material owner and get a lease on the material or something its more of an encyclopedia...

The best thing to do would be to carefully cite the works of others to make sure that you don't get in trouble for plagiarism.

I am in criminal justice in college. That would be pledgerism. but if you use " and quoat them" then no it is not aganist the law. good luck buddy.
