Would you omit a job on your resume?
|
4 yrs ago I was offered and accepted a job in another state. It all happened so fast. Within 2 wks I moved from my home to the new state, started the job, things did not work out & within 3 months, I quit & I was back home at my old job. I did have a bad ending with the job in the other state though, bcz things just did not go well, I was issued a job warning & when I left I was belligerent to my co-workers via email & given a warning that if I contact any of them I would be given a restraining order. I havent contacted anyone there since. That was 4 yrs ago. The job lasted only 3 months. Now I want to go back to the same state to find another job & start a new life.
I dont think the "details" of what happened would be spoken on - also the same people who worked there when I was employed there are no longer there. Should I leave them off of my resume or should I mention that I did work there for a short time?

You Shouldn't Have

You should be able to bypass the three months especially if you only put month and year of employment on resume or application.
WIZ brought up a valid point though? :<) |

I would leave it off your Resume -- there is no reason to put it on there. However, many employers will also have you fill out a job application that asks for the last x jobs. I would not leave it off of there.
When attempting to get a job, honesty is the best policy. Oh, I wouldn't talk about the e-mail but I would indicate that you moved for a job and it didn't work out. You were then rehired at your current position which indicates that you were not a bad employee.
If asked why it was not on your Resume, indicate that you only wanted to include relevant information on the Resume, and the job was so short as to not be really relevant. If you have a full Resume, why try to squeeze a 3 month position on there? |

This is a tough call. If the job was a little shorter and in a different state I might leave it off. But, if you get an over eager new employer who pulls your employment records from the state or US government (your w-2 records) you will be caught in a lie. It would be best to just to put it on there with little description and if asked say you learned a valuable lesson from that job. It was 4 years ago and it shouldn't matter too much.
Good luck! |

Good question!
It's ok to have gaps in time on your resume, but be prepared to explain the gaps if you're asked.
But, not every recruiter will notice a 3-month gap. A year or more would definitely get noticed.
But, if the job you worked is related to the job you're trying to get, you should definitely include it on your resume. |

I wouldn't omit it. Especially if there is no one there to dispute your version of events. The most they will tell a prospective employer is the dates you worked there and weather or not you are eligible for rehire. It happens all the time... people take jobs that just don't work out. It is not as big a deal as being caught in a lie. |

Before composing a resume, one must clearly understand what one is applying for and research the institution and the type of person that is sought. Then you take the information that you have of your past general studies and specific areas that are relative to the position you are applying for. One accentuates the positive and eliminates the negative. In a one to one and a half page of a typed resume, there is no room for a 3 month period of work experience - unless you accomplished something spectacular.
Remember that the one reading the resume gives it about 20 seconds and then goes to the end only rarely and only if caught up by the concise style. Make sure to use action words and short phrases.
How many are selected! The resume gets you invited for an interview. Then if you are asked about past failures, and only then, should you mention the above incident and use it as a frank self-appraisal and remark that it served to teach you a lesson. Be prepared to explain the actual situation and what it taught you. Finish by stating that failure is a stepping stone to future success and if one fails, one learns from it and goes on. |

I would leave it off. A job that lasts only 3 months makes your resume look worse instead of better in the first place. It gives the impression that you are a "job hopper". If you have a 3 month job that ended on a negative note, you really don't want to include it.
90% of potential employers won't look closely enough to notice the gap. If any interviewers ask you about the gap, simply tell them that you were with said company briefly and did not feel it was significant enough to mention on your resume. |

I'd probably leave it off, realizing that you may get asked aobut the gap in your employment history. Three months is a pretty brief period of time, easily explained by "doing some consulting work on the side while searching for a new job," or something along those lines.
Good luck. |
