You need references from your workplace, but if you don't have workplace, it's better to have references from teachers than none. I used my teachers because I had no work experience...and that saved me.

No. It can be helpful if you have one. A better approach is to try for an internship and get real life experience in your field. Then you likely will have several references from your intern company.
