employer paid normal salary while I was off sick and wants to recover now

I have been employed for nearly two years now by a construction company, and previous 8 years as subcontractor. Last year I fell ill so badly I couldn't work. I agreed with employer to take time off (without providing sick note)for about 6 wks and during that time was paid my normal wages. After 6 wks I was back to work however my condition remained the same and had to have operation. Employer wanted to recover money he believed overpaid me and after all we agreed I'll work saturdays for free. It's been 2 months since the operation now and last month I was offered £1000 towards my mortgage payment, which I believed was my sick pay and accepted it. I wasn't relieved for long though as I was told later this was only a Loan?!So I been paid nothing during my recovery time. When I raised a querry I was told I had been overpaid already at the time my sick leave started. Which I think is highly unfair, I'm not sure what to do now. I was told I owe company £5000 now! I won't be back to work for another month and wonder how I will make it. Can my employer do such thing and recover the money? What about employee rights? What should I do? I would be grateful if somebody could help.
