Okay, take a deep breath, this isn't going to ruin your life!
The state this happened in and the value of the stuff you took could make a difference. But I have never heard of anyone doing jail time for a first time shoplifting conviction. Have you?
You have time to decide whether or not you need a lawyer. Beware of "free" consultations, most are simply sales pitches , you want free advice, they don't want to give you enough to help , they want you to pay to represent you.
Go to your first court date without a lawyer. Ask for the opportunity to speak with the District/county/assistent /whatever/ attorney before you are called before the judge if they will let you,i f you are not okay with what the DA wants to do, you plead not guilty and ask for time to hire a lawyer. .Local courts do things differently, but it's almost always okay to ask the court CLERK a question about speaking to the DA.
Dress like you were going to an important job interview, it gives the impression you take this seriously and respect the court. Bring the best evidence you have that you are an enrolled student, where, , your GPA, when you go back, good citizenship awards, whatever you have that makes this look like a one time (possibly stress-induced?) mistake, not the first step to a life of crime.
Important to remember that the court is NOT MAD at you, you are small potatoes, plus you are (BE) respectful, and sorry..
You won't feel the worst part right away. It's when you apply for jobs and are asked to disclose any misdemeanor convictions you have had in the past seven/ten years and you have to say shoplifting. They check, too.. You were suppose to get this out of you system in high school! But, hey, tha's t why they call them "consequences".
You'll be okay. Good luck. |

Since this is your first violation, the chances of you getting jail time is very slim.
You will get just probation.
However, if you do have a record from this, your getting a job or going to grad school can be affected. |

Be very apologetic when you go to court, and get a lawyer. Charges won't likely be dropped, but you might get just probation or community service or both, if you've never been in trouble before. You probably won't get jail time but it's a possibility. Some could depend on the value of what you stole.
Going back to school out of state shouldn't be a problem assuming you aren't in jail. |

If you're a college student with a 3.9 GPA, why were you shoplifting at a Walmart? |

Pay out the nose to keep this off your record.Go get a lawyer,he or she can help. Ya even misdemeanors can hurt when looking for employmentand other things. GoodLuck... AND don't do this again. Pay for it. Got it. |

if you really got a 3.9 gpa you shouldve known that shoplifting was the stupidest thing you could do |

No it's not possible to get the charges dropped but you should be speaking to an attorney rather than asking questions on Yahoo. Even if you only get probation you will have a criminal record which will follow you for the rest of your life. Many places will refuse to hire you, you will be ineligible to receive many types of government assistance, many countries will refuse to give you an entry permit, the list goes on and on.
This from a college student with a 3.9 GPA that doesn't know how to spell or write a sentence? I'm curious which college. I'll be sure to tell everyone I know not to go there. |

I'm sure you'll be able to go back to school. You'll probably have to pay a fine or do some community service. Depends on what the judge decides... Just curious though, WHY did you do that? |

You are a criminal, the charges are not going to be dropped. What will happen will depend if you committed a felony or a misdemeanor, all that is determined by the value of the items you were attempting to steal. You wil most likely be on probation. The real thing that will get you is that you will now have a criminal record to carry around with you, which will make finding a job after college very hard, especially if you are a convicted felon. And you will be convicted, Wal-mart has you on film. |

i would imagine that an international company like walmart would have a policy about shoplifting that was pretty strict and likely different based on the value amount of the stuff you stole. if you got a lawyer, you could get reduced to fines & community service vs jail time- what the heck did you steal that they would send you to JAIL for, honestly?! you're likely going to get off pretty easily- i mean, really, it isn't like you stole a car or something worth many thousands of dollars- it IS walmart, right? they generally don't force you to stay in state for shoplifting a few cd's or whatever... don't worry so much!
good luck! |

My assumption is this wasn't a candy bar you were trying to steal. A lot of times it has to do with the $ amount of the item you were taking. And from the newspapers I've read Walmart does not take it lightly and will not drop charges. |
