i work front desk at a hotel and my boss just asked me to take over the accounts receivable department as their current accounts lady is retiring. i do not have any training in this department so i have been training with her on ALL of my days off. i am expected to add these duties to my normal front desk night shift. i will have to do twice as much work as the other 5 front desk employees and i will not get a pay raise. i work every friday, saturday and sunday night when newer employees get mon-fri morning hours (which are everyone's desired hours). a friend at work and i have both asked my boss multiple times to schedule us fairly (ie: splitting up with weekend shifts). he agrees, apologizes..and then does nothing. the other employees have the same open availability as i do- but for whatever reason i keep getting the worst hours when i am a dependable, trustworthy and personable employee. there have never been any guest or employee complaints about me..i do my job well.
i don't think the added responsibility of the accounts department to my already busy night shifts without a pay raise or at least better hours is fair. it feels almost as though it's some sort of punishment.
what do you think?

Well, yeah. I personally think you are getting taken advantage of BECAUSE you are a good worker. In my years of working retail prior to becoming a paralegal, I found that I was often the best worker but treated the worst. Why? Because they depend on you to do everything and know you won't complain. Somewhere in their heads, they reason that you will be the most willing, and the most flexible and they take advantage of that.
If you are taking on additional duties, then your job title should change along with a lot of other things such as a pay raise, etc. It sounds like your boss knows that the "newer" employees would probably call our their shift or not show up and is depending on your dependability.
Sounds like an official talk should be made and maybe you should start looking for other employment opportunities. There are really only two options in this scenario. Make demands and get higher level people involved, or find another place to work. |

Years ago, I once had a boss who told me that when he needed a job to be done, he always asked the person who was overworked. The reason, was that he knew that person would do it.
Could be that the newer employees have children and are unable to get sitters to work evenings, or when they were hired told them they could not work evenings at all, so they get them. It appears that when you started working there, they most likely hired you to work weekends/evenings so will stay with it.
Granted with the addtl responsibilities you should get more money, but unlikely you will. In this crappy economy, employers rule and do whatever they want since so many people out there need jobs.
Now here is the bright side. Learn the accounts receivable job and do it well. Then say in about 6 months when you have the job down pat, look for another job in another hotel. You now have one extra skill you can add to your resume vs just working the front desk. The other advantage you would have is that many employers love to "steal" other employees from rival companies. So say you work for Holiday Inn, then apply at the Marriott or one that could be located real close to where you work since many are located close together. And if you were to get a job at a rival, could put you in a position that if they really want you, they will pay you more and might get you back on days and no weekends.
Stick it out and you may find that it will work out best if you hang on.
good luck |
