paralegal question ....please answer?

I've answered the question before, but I think I have another user that purposely seeks out my posts and gives them negative ratings because it is the same amount each time. Some people can be real winners...

I am a construction litigation paralegal, and I am hoping by telling you that, it will add some weight to my answer. I've been working in this field for two years while I gear up for law school.

Potential employers are NOT going to hold the fact that you do not have an ABA approved program against you. If you go to www.abanet.com, I am sure you can find a statement of their criteria. I would find a community college or associate's program in your area, get a copy of the degree plan/curriculum that they offer and compare the two. I think you'll be surprised that most community college programs ARE compliant. They just can't afford to accredit their program with the American Bar Association. The school I attended was ABA compliant until the year I graduated because, you guessed it. The program couldn't afford to stay a member, so I know this from personal experience. Their program is still the same program, offering the same classes but just doesn't advertise the ABA seal anymore.

The ABA approval will not keep you from finding employment. I know I, for one, often answer these questions stressing the importance of an ABA program. I do that because there are so many scam programs out there. By telling someone they NEED an ABA approved program stresses the importance of a true education.

I would hope the attorneys and firms in your area would understand that there is no local program to be had. I also suggest contacting paralegals in your area through the state bar association or the local bar associations and ask what they have done for education. I think you will find that there are plenty of paralegals that attended non-ABA approved programs that hold employment.

While, yes. It is important to be able to tell an employer that you school gave you a credible education, you can also demonstrate that you took the time to find the standard and molded your education the best you could to accommodate the fact that you did not have an ABA program available.

I agree with the previous poster, while ABA approved paralegal schools are great, you don't have to go to one in order to find a job.
