If you get a JD (in the US, or the equivalent abroad) and specialize in international law, you'll be able to practice in the public or the private sectors. Public international law is things like human rights and international treaties and organizations. These are competitive positions (you're competing with lawyers from the whole world for most jobs) and vary in terms of legal work versus policy work and things like that. Private international law is generally between corporations, and you would negotiate contracts, help foreign companies with adherence to tax and other laws, and arbitrate disputes between corporations, among other things. Both sectors can involve a lot of international travel at the higher levels, but just starting out you would probably be in the US (or your home country) and would do very little if any international travel until you've moved up the ranks.
If you're studying international law as a bachelor's, master's, or even a PhD, you would be limited to policy work or academia for the most part. |
