Is it pointless? I would say it is totally dependent on what you want to do and what career path you are taking. A law degree will, in the end, cost you close to $100,000 of school debt. By the time you factor in tuition, living expenses and books...give or take a few thousand, you will be at least that much in the hole.

The question you need to be asking is how would a law degree apply to your path and whether or not the investment will yield returns. I, personally, know quite a few peers that attended law school and did not choose to take the bar. In the career paths they took, it was beneficial. I know one of my high school friends that attended law school, did not take the bar, and applied for a public relations position for a huge company in NYC. She was hired because of her undergraduate work, and the law degree pushed her to the top. I would assume it showed she had the skills to draft public announcements and know what information she could and couldn't/shouldn't release. She visits me once a year. Her currently salary is more than any attorney I know.

What these ignorant posters fail to tell you is that not all attorneys work in high rise buildings and drive BMW's and Lexus cars. I know lifelong attorneys that may not make more than $70,000k a year. Not all attorneys make hundreds of thousands a year. There are actually attorneys doing good work for their community and live on Ramen noodles, and drive Geo Metros. Watch the movie, "Two Weeks Notice." While not accurate, it does portray one truth. There are many attorneys that work for Legal Aid and other community programs that barely make enough to support themselves. Not all attorneys work for the money, nor is it guaranteed.

Ask yourself how the degree will help you and whether or not you will be able to pay off the debt you incurred. Whatever path you choose, do your research and really find out if in your path, it is necessary.

If, in paraphrasing the last three words, you mean...charge a fee for my services and/or present myself as an attorney... it would still be absolutely not. No other post graduate program has the universal flexibility and appreciation of a JD or LLB and, only with exceptions in the most extreme cases of specific requirements, will get your resume in the short stack throughout the management sector. A better understanding of the world is not worthless just because you are not directly profiting from it. Good Luck.
