Try turning off your phone during class and learning something.

I think it's wrong that people still don't know how to turn their phone to silent mode. |

Charging $20 is ethically wrong, but I fully support confiscating cell phones that ring during class time. |

What does this have to do with marriage or divorce? |

You're probably the same person that leaves their cell phone on during a movie aren't you?
How about the simplest solution and just be sure the phone is off. You're in school to learn not to take phone calls.
Guess what your actions or lack there of have consequences in the adult world. Learn them now and you won't have to learn them later. |

When one of my friends was taking the bar exam (to be a lawyer), they announced that if anyone's cell phone went off, the person would be immediately escored from the room and not allowed to finish the exam. Since you have to pay a few thousand bucks to take the test, you'd be out those fees. And some people had jobs contingent on passing the bar, so you might get fired.
Well, one cell phone went off. And the person who owned it didn't confess. So they called the phone company to find out whose it was. Yeah, not good.
The point of this answer is that cell phones, while essential, are also a menace in places where you shouldn't be disturbed. Like at school. Schools should be teaching teens to check the phone ALL THE TIME and ensure that it's not on. $20 now is a small price to pay compared to failing the bar exam. Think, think THINK.
There may be some problems with this policy (since it may be discrimination based upon economic status) but it would probably hold up (just like library fines for overdue books). |

Well, Sammy...while it may seem unfair, if it's the rule, then they have to enforce it. My suggestion to you would be to put it on silence mode, then when you have a free period, check to see if there is any activity you can respond to it then. Unfortunately, you can't change things, even if they seem unfair. You can only try to adjust your thinking so that you don't get worked up over something you can't control. Good luck! |

Here's an idea - follow the rules and turn your cell phone off during class.
If the end of the world comes, you'll have time to make a call. Short of that, you don't need to be texting your bff Jill during chemistry. It'll wait, trust me. |

Great idea, I hate inconsiderate people! Phones are going off at weddings, funerals, dinners, schools and plenty of other inapropriate places and I can not stand it! Most people just aren't that important to need to have their phone ringing all the time and/or a silly ear piece in all the time, It just looks ridiculous! Unless your the head of a multinational corporation, CEO, doctor or other high ranking official you can probably wait. Have some sensibility and consideration for others! |

I have never had to pay any money to get one of the kids items back. I can see their point though. They figure if they make the parents pay then they will be more willing to make sure the kids don't bring them to school. Parents tend to be more strict when money is involved. |

I dont think that is legal? It is your property. If they are going to do that I would refuse to give it to them until they grab you then press assault charges. |

You shouldn't have your cell on at school. You are there to learn. If you need a cell for after school or emergencies, then you go to the proper designated areas to use it.
I'm sure the $20 fine isn't used to punish the student, it's used as a deterrent for you to continue using the phone in an unauthorized manner. Some people can't follow the rules even when they've been warned in advance. I certainly would't make that mistake if I knew it was going to come out of my mom's pocket! |

It will teach you not to have a cell phone turned on and using during school hours. Not wrong. They are probably having to deal with a great deal of cell phones isuses and are simply tired of it. God bless**** |

I think they are thinking that you won't do it after the first time you get socked with a fine. It does feel a little bit like extorion, but if you know the rules upfront, you can't complain about it. |

As a parent I do not think this is wrong. I personally think cell phones do not belong in school. School is for learning, and cell phones are for after school. Theresa |

No. I think it's brilliant! Hit 'em where it hurts! The idea is to TURN THE D**N PHONE OFF. They are hoping that if a parent has to pay $20 to get the phone out of jail, perhaps the parents will be more effective in communicating to their kids that it is unacceptable. Frankly, if it were my child, the phone would stay in jail for at least a week before I got it out -- with THEIR money! |
|

bocasbeachbum

They should keep it a week and then charge to get it back. |

i believe that is wrong charging money for it
in my school they confiscate the cell phone for a day then you can pick it up a day later |

Well, I suppose it's a bit harsh.
On the other hand, if you are just given a slap on the hand, chances are you are going to do it again.
That way, I bet that the same person doesn't do it twice!!!
I think that what they want is for parents to take some responsibility in the way their kids behave.
Fair enough, you provide him/her with a mobile phone for school, well, make sure he/ she doesn't make a nuisance of himself/ herself in class with it!!!
I actually think that it could be very effective even if a tad hard.
But, until people learn to take responsibility for their actions, then nothing is going to change for the better!!! |

were you informed in a language you understood that no cell phones were permitted in class or school? If you were, what part didn't you understand? |

Good incentive to those people who are ignorant and choose to leave those annoying cell phones on while other people are trying to absorb an education.
Somehow I'm willing to bet you're not in the 'absorbing education' line are you? |

Yeah, that isn't legal. Have your parents call the cops and report it as stolen by the principal. |

You may not be the only one, but it is still right. If its a known rule then there is no reason to argue it. If they just made it up and started enforcing it without telling anyone that would be different.
BTW it would be my son who had to pay the $20, not me. |

Why is your phone on during class anyway??
Turn it off and it won't get taken!!
This has what to do with divorce?? |

It depends on the whole story. In some schools, students and parents have to sign an agreement that cellphones are not to be brought into class or they are to be on silent mode. Breaking this there could be some kind of policy that was agreed to by the parents. It is probably a policy enforced by the board of education. $20 seems kind of steep. I would see if your parents signed something at the beginning of the school year. |

All schools aren't the same and maybe the situation is a little out of control. Still it is wrong for them to make you pay to have your phone back. |
