Any advice I am always tired and at a wits end?

I am 14 and always tired. I get 9-10 hours sleep. Sometimes it isn't good quality because I fall asleep reading and my light is left on. I never have enough energy for my school work and I never feel awake. I get up feeling more tired than when I went to sleep. I don't feel depressed, I am just really tired. Does anyone have any tips on what could be wrong and the best ways to get into deep sleep?

You might want to get a blood test to make sure that you are not anemic. Anemia is low iron in your blood and it makes you very tired and difficult to do your work. When I was in high school, I couldn't retain anything I learned and my grades started slipping. My parents would scream at me because of my grades and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I was doing everything I was supposed to. Someone told my mother to take me to the doctor and sure enough I was anemic. Once I started taking iron pills, my energy, my memory and my grades came back.

There are a couple of likely explanations for this. If this started after a sore throat, cold or flu, then it could be post-viral fatigue. There's no specific treatment for this but a homeopathic doctor may be able to help you get back to normal. Another possibility is that you are nutritionally deficient - this is quite common in teenagers. Quite a few of the young people I see don't eat properly - they skip breakfast, eat junk (or nothing) for lunch, drink fizzy drinks and eat too many sweets and chocs. You are growing and need to eat well and sensibly. Breakfast is a good start, and cut out the rubbish. Also, are you getting enough exercise - that's vital for your energy. You're certainly getting enough sleep - possibly even too much. Have a think about the above and see if there's room for improvement. Try it for a few weeks and see if you don't feel better.

have you had your thyroid check. also get some blood work tested for other things. your doctor will know.

this is very typical in your teenage years, you should grow out of it. in the meantime try looking at your diet, eat more carbs and stay away from junk food

You seem to be getting enough sleep, but maybe not quality sleep. Set yourself a time to stop reading before you fall asleep with the light on. Maybe you could workout a little before you read to exert yourself so you will be able to get more tired! Next you need to get your blood checked for anemia (low iron) or hypothyroidism (big word for slow thyroid which controls metabolism). My daughter was like this at the age of 16. She was constantly tired and started gaining a little weight and it was the thyroid. Good luck!

You need to get your Thyroid checked. T3, T4 and TSH has got to be done to rule out Hypothyroidism. Then there may be psychological factors causing this condition, like Dysthymia. Either ways you need to see your doctor soon, since this may interfere in your academic performance.

have you considered that you might be anaemic. you could just be lacking iron in the blood and can get a tonic or pills from the chemists.
