Are premarital inventories useful?

I am getting married in June. We are having a non-denominational wedding and will not have premarital counseling through a church or elsewhere. I was considering taking a "premarital inventory" It seems that there are 3 commonly used ones: Relate, Foccus, and Prepar/Enrich. I'm not sure which one to use. Any opinions would be helpful.

I have always found it ironic how so many people, particularly women, want to race to the alter, but never put the same energy into planning their marriage, than just the wedding. So much is put on that, totally void about what two-five-kids-ten year down the road really looks like.
Thinking ahead is a good idea, thinking about how to get there is even better with two people, especially if they are polar couple who have really contrasting ideas about stuff. Most of these ideas tend to surface years after the wedding, especially when it comes to how to raise children and what kind of big expenses such as houses and cars go. Most young people expect the world at an young age, so they tend to make a lot of crazy and bad decisions early on with mentality of just get on-board, and lets get married, and rush off into life. |

You know what TK? You are pretty smart. Most people put more planning into their wedding ceremony than they put into their marriage. You are on the right track. It does not matter which you select, the important thing it that you understand that successful marriages do not just happen. And also beware that even with all the planning and all the communications, there are a number of unknown factors that you both still have to endure.
Just never forget that a successful marriage is a daily job. Neither of you can ever take it for granted, and both of you must always be willing to compromise for each other. |
