Daughters of cheating fathers: how does it affect their own relationships?

My father cheated on my mother with a girl who was about the same age as me (~21 at the time). He was never really involved in our life anyway and my parents share no intimacy but what he did killed me inside and made me fearful. On a psychological level, what impact does a cheating parent have on an adult child?

My wife is the daughter of a cheating father. She still has major trust issues and I've never done anything to give her cause to distrust me. Her mother was married 25 years when she finally got rid of him. I think it made them more self-reliant, which is good. But the bad side is that I think it gave them a bit of the mentality that "you can't count on a man to stay with you and so you always have to be ready to stand on your own two feet." My wife is a lot better than she was, but we've been married 16 years and there are still some deep issues there.

I have not been in that situation but I would think that it would cause the child to not trust men ever again. The only 1 person that you think you can trust 100 % and he does that to your mother.... GROSS Just my opinion

My father cheated on my mother the whole time I was growing up. My mom knew about it but stayed with him because we kids needed both parents. Mom and dad are still married but dad lives with another woman, mom looks back and says she should have left him that it was a mistake to stay with him because of the damage it did to us kids. I think it has affected me that when I was living with someone and found out he was cheating I forgave him because that's what my mom always did.

It just teaches you to be an independent person..my father has cheated on all of his wives and just divorced his 3rd wife. I completely understand where you are coming from except for the age thing. If he was never really involved in your life in the first place, you have nothing to worry about. Both unfaithful fathers just teach us (their daughters) to be independent and I'm sure your mom has show you that she is just fine raising you alone. Being married isn't a goal that women should want to achieve. Just be your own person and love will find you.. Hopefully this helped you..

As hurtful as this experience was to you, I think you might find yourself being driven toward guys who have the same characteristics as your father, just make sure that your not putting up with cheating, abuse or anything that you know you don't deserve.

Your father is your father and I'm sure your going to love him no matter what. It sounds like he has some insecurities with himself and thats why he felt the need to cheat on your mom with a way younger girl. Tell yourself that your father is human and he made a mistake and I really suggest if you ever get the opportunity to sit down and talk to him or even write him a letter that tells him how it made you feel when he did this to your mom, it will make you feel a lot better.

People make mistakes, and we often put our parents on a pedestal and think they can do no wrong, but really they have the same insecurities as everyone else and sometimes they act on them. What he did is not okay but he's your father and you need to tell him how you feel.

idk -but after seeing all of that as a growing child, i'd expect you to have issues with trust, loyalty, self-esteem...on and on. unfortunately, women choose men that are very much like their fathers.

I'm daughter of a cheating father, he cheated on my mother with a much younger woman whom is now his wife. It disturbed me a lot at the beginning but within the years I understood that there are reasons inside a marriage that you'll never understand, that even my father has the right to be wrong, to change his mind, to make mistakes. He is a human being and not a superhero.
I think we (sons and daughters), unconsciously believe our parents belong to us, but my father never told me what to study or whom to marry, so I have to respect his decisions as well.
He is an excellent father so I am really fond and grateful to him, and he will remain my father no matter what. I leaned to understand that he did not marry me and he did not divorce me, so I shouldn't take personally his love decisions.
Now he is so happy with this woman I am happy for him, and I have a very good relationship with both of them.
You'll be fine, don't worry!

It has a great affect on a relationship of an adult child. My father did the same thing with my mother. I became mad at the both of them. I was mad at my mother for letting it happen and then my dad for not respecting my mother. Then when I started dating I had a hard time being true about my feelings. I am married now and my husband never cheated on me, however it always stays on mind that if I do the wrong thing or say the wrong thing will he find someone else and cheat on me. So it is always in the back of my mind.
