Hi,
I have suffered from Depression and Anxiety for nearly 6 years and have recently decided to come off my medication. It has been just over a month and I am already starting to struggle, I really want to make my life work without the pills. The problem is that my husband is a very introverted and selfish person and he often aggrivates my mood and makes it worse. He has always found it hard to cope with my illness and finds it even harder to empathise.
He used to be very reclusive and suffers from mild agrophobia. This means that our social life is non-existant and any time I do persuade him to go to the cinema or a bar with friends he becomes quiet and awkward.
It is a vicious cycle as I am outgoing and sociable and need these interactions in my life.
My husband is such a lovely person, he is funny and clever and I want people to see that, but he feels uncomfortable in public and ends up coming across as rude or moody.
I am worried because I am not sure whether we should be together when we make each others lives so difficult.
Can you advise?

I would just like to add that when we started dating he was different, he was sociable and outgoing and he was affectionate with me. Now it is like he doesn't need to make the effort.
I thought that it was enough that we get on so well when it is just the two of us but I feel it could be so much better if we could socialise together as well.
Also, it was my doctor that suggested I come off the meds as we were looking to start a family. Which is off the cards now as I have not been coping.

I think that if both of you were to break up it would be devastating for each others lives. He might not show it but to him you seem to be his lifeline, his lifevest. You might feel the same about him. You both just have to manage each others problems. Please go back to the medication at leat for a while. I came off of it and it work because I changed my mindset about things. But youmight want to stay in it for a little bit. |

Why did you lose the medication?
If you're a long term sufferer, you will probably need to stay on the pills forever.
None of this is your husband's fault because he's not responsible for your well being, you are. Sure, it would be nice if he helped, but you can't rely on him for that. He's got his own problems. |

No one can answer the question about you being together but you. And your heart will tell you that. Imagine yourself living seperately from him and how does it make you feel?
I know couples similar to you that make it work. The social one goes out with friends and socializes, takes trips etc. The other one stays home and is happy there and they are very happy. Being married doesnt mean you spend every waking moment together.
As for understanding your illness....no one does unless they have experienced it or known someone close at hand with it. People who dont understand will think the other person is just being lazy or a hypochondriac. Resentment builds up and hurts the relationship.
Have you tried marriage counseling? Communication is breaking down here and its important to reconcile it before considering parenting. Children require even more communication between parents to raise them. Take care and good luck. |
