Did college get in the way of you and your spouse? at any age?
Find answers to your legal question.

Did college get in the way of you and your spouse? at any age?

Do you or your spouse have a degree? Does it help/hurt your relationship?
How many of you have a degree, whether associates, bachelors or more? Do your spouses? Did you know your spouse in college? how long did it take you to get done with your degree(s)??

Did time spent getting the degree cause any tension in your relationship?

Just wondering what different people do and how long it took them to get where they are.....I am wondering if there was one person in the relationship who took later or quit classes at any point, if it caused any trouble in the relationship, how were you able to cope? Did you end up eventually getting it?

Also I was wondering about people who may have took MORE than the "traditional" 4 years....

It can cause problems due to the huge time commitment and the long duration of it but it also can be something the two of you work together to accomplish.

Dragging it out means more years before getting the better income and a longer time before starting a family. This will become a bigger and bigger sticking point to people approaching the middle-years 30/40. If you are still in your 20's you have time to finish.

I met my wife in college; it took me 3 years to finish my degrees; eventually she stopped and worked to support us while I went to school; once I got a job she went back and finished her degree; after that we started our family at the ages of 25 (pregnant at 24) - were together 6 years and married for 3 by then.

Those first few years of marriage we developed very bad habits where we would do all kinds of things independently of each other - we still partied with our college friends and had separate hobbies. We were apart too much and then those habits stuck with us going forward and made us drift apart.
The earlier years in college we couldn't afford to do much else than hang out together and back then all the parties were open bashes; after college people got more selective in who they invited.

My sister took a long time to finish her degree; she had to work and support herself and pay for tuition so it took her 7 or 8 years. She lost her older, long-time, boyfriend who wanted to settle down start a family after a few years into college.
Had they done what my wife (then gf) and I did, they probably would be together today but I think his family objected on religious grounds (no cohabitation until married).

I met my husband just over 4 years ago when he was 38 and I was 36. He and his ex wife took turns putting themselves through college - she got a nursing degree, he got an M Div. They had kids after that.

Just over a year ago, he started in on his second graduate degree. He's hoping to have his thesis written by the end of next year.

Does it cause tension? Not at all. When he's done his degree and back in the workforce I might just quit my job and get one of my own.

I was married my whole time in college except for the first semester. With the transfer from junior college, and one major change, plus working the last 2 years, I completed college with a B.S. in 5 years. We are still married after 22 years. She no longer has to work except for stay at home mom stuff. I had a GI type bill from the army helping out with finances. College didn't affect our relationship one way or another at the time.

I started college right out of high school at 18. After three semesters, I decided to quit, get a job and move out of state. This is when I met my husband.

We got married when I turned 20, I decided I wanted to receive a higher education and returned to college for seven more semesters (a summer course included) and finally received my Bachelors Degree at 23.

So yeah, it took me a bit longer and was challenging, as I also worked a PT job while attending college, as well as being married, but it was all worth it. Can't complain because my husband was really supportive.
And of course, we didn't have our son until 5 yrs after I had graduated (we were married for 7 years when he was born), so waiting to have kids made things a whole lot easier.

No. My husband has a high school diploma and I am currently in school getting my Bachelor's degree. He is proud of me for coming so far with my education.

I also have a great job that I do from my house so that I can stay-at-home with my twin 3 year old boys. I go to school full-time. If anything, my husband is awestruck that I can handle all this crap and still manage to clean the house, make dinner and then please him in the bedroom.

He is in the Army and will consider school when he gets out.
