Did you have a big extravagant wedding ?
|
I had a very small wedding, just me, my wife, her rabbi and my mother as a witness. It cost practically nothing. I think people go way over the top when it comes to weddings. What a waste of money, if you're joined together legally isn't that the most important thing, not to mention the whole point of it.

I planned the big wedding & then canceled it. Too much stress, too much money, too much pressure. I just thought at one point it became ridiculous.
We went to Maui instead & got married on the beach with 2 of our friends as witnesses. It was gorgeous & we were parasailing the next morning :-) |

Mine was $3500. I actually even wanted to elope but my husband wanted a wedding. I'm glad it was so cheap, still married 5 years later. I know people that are divorced but still paying off their wedding. |

We were married at the courthouse. I don't think it matters where you get married as long as you are happy. |

I organised my wedding in 6 weeks and had 21 family members to the main part of the day. I then had an evening reception of bout 100 people with a band and a buffet. We had a brilliant day it cost less than £1000 and we are still happy thank god! |

People love to celebrate, and I don't think spending money on celebrations is necessarily a "waste of money". We had very little money when we were kids, but we always had birthday parties - both my brother and I. It was a way to make us feel "special" - although, really, who cares what day you were born on? All that matters is that you're alive, right? Same with weddings; people want to mark the occasion, to celebrate - and some are willing to invest some funds into it. So what? I had a very informal and low-budget wedding, but if someone feels it's important to have certain things at their wedding, I wouldn't condemn them outright. Yes, it's stupid to spend the money you don't have and all this stuff, but that goes for everything (racking up your credit card debt at Nordstrom's, getting into a sub-prime mortgage etc), so it's not a problem unique to weddings. However, if you have the money and can afford it, it's as worthy a cause to spend on as any other. |

We didn't spend a whole lot.
We had a luah with like 200 people in my parents back yard. I did spend a lot on booze and a moonwalk though.
Great party! |

My first wedding was very traditional and cost my parents something like seven thousand dollars (in 1993). Two hundred people, prime rib reception, full church Mass, etc. Waiting in the limo outside the church with my Dad I wanted to tell the driver to leave (as I did not truly feel I should go through with it) but I went through with it because I didn't want to disappoint my Dad and felt bad about all the money they had spent. We got divorced anyway. I remarried years later with a very small wedding on the beach that cost me about $500. It was fantastic!! Small intimate weddings are so underrated. |

Nope! Vegas Twice and Court House once! There is no way I would put money into a five second deal when you need that money to live on these days now. |

i had a huge wedding on a yacht, cost over $250K and i would have been happier with a wedding at Mcdonalds with someone that i loved! |

Sort of. Formal wedding at a park, 150 people. We paid for almost all of it. It was fine but cost us (nobody helped) a fortune and it really wasn't worth it, especially when we were quite poor at the time.
In retrospect I think we should have had a small (30 or less) wedding. |

My story's a lot like CC's, above. I agree with you completely. All that money for a party would be better put toward a down payment on a house. The tradition of spending so much on weddings is crazy, in my opinion, unless you're rich enough that you really don't need that $5K or $10K or $20K or $40K or whatever it is.
I also agree with Sandy Ego that a wedding is an important occasion to celebrate with joy, but only within your means. |

I had a small intimate wedding the the "family" house (where we all gather for holidays). It was on New Years Eve so the house was still decorated for CHRISTmas. The group was about 50 people (large family) but it was awesome. Personal, candles, dim lights. Nothing flashy. I loved it. |

In my opinion when you can afford it you already know your love for your wife or husband soon to be why you have to spend so much to let someone else to see criticise and try to manipulate? |

I had 200 guests, and was married in a cathedral, but it was noway extravagant.
We have a large family between us, I am a dress maker so I made all the dresses including my own, all for under £200, the only expense was the photographer, and the catering. But is came in around £600 for everything.
The wedding cars were free as I used to clean them as a teenager, they belonged to my best friend's Dad, and our Honey moon was a week in Scotland.
I agree if you love some one that is the main thing.
People who spend thousands are wasting ££. |
