I was just curious if when you are married, if you worked together to pay off student loans? My fiance has 12 thousand in loans and I have close to 40.

Yes, I paid it off with his life insurance policy after he passed away on June 19th, 2008. I would have rather paid it myself. |

No, my late husband didn't pay a dime of my student loans. He didn't have any cause his parents paid for his whole college ride.
Education is a personal investment in yourself. You should pay your own.
But spliting the bills helps you to be able pay your own debt. So in a roundabout way; they are helping you. |

First of all - that is not a lot of money to feel bad about.
Let me make you feel better....combined my husband and I have 100,00 in loans and most of it is mine. When you get married - its for better or worse and you should share responsibilities and bills. That shouldn't even be a question. You should be a combined household - and have your own money to do what you want with - within reason - but most money should go towards combined goals...and the bills should be a combined effort.
He shouldn't care. He should want to help you. He should want your lives to both be equally as great. What if yours was 200,000 and his was 5. Should he expect you to live in poverty while he doesn't...? Doesn't make sense does it?
We save a certain amount for our own "fun money" and the rest goes in a joint account for bills. All bills come out of that account and we contribute to savings with what is left over. Example - if I make 30g - I would keep about 5 or so for me - the rest goes towards us...get me?
Establish common ground on the money topic now - this is a big deal in marriage.......thats my advice.
and in response to the above poster about it being a "personal investment in yourself"....what about if you got sick and had medical bills? Is that a personal investment you make on yourself too that the husband shouldn't be helping pay...what different does it make WHAT the bill is?! |
