Yes. whether or not children are involved, running a household is the job of the "housewife." Which means :
1. Making sure the bills are paid( she may work inside the home or the husband may provide the money) The house wife is the banker for the household.
2. Keeping the house clean and in good repair (even if she has to call professionals, someone has to be there) even though she serves as the maid for those who live inside the house.
3. Doing the grocery shopping and preparing the meals
4. Keeping the laundry done and in good repair
5. Being the security for the home
6. Makings sure all of the important documents are taken care of
7. Keeping the outside of the home in good repair.
8. Being the responsible one for the care of the children if there are any.
9. Being the teacher,Doctor,Referee, the Parent,The Rock for the children and the Husband when needed
10. Being the interior decorator, the caterer, and the one who takes the car to the mechanic or for new tags
11.Being the one who takes care of any pets
12. Being the one who keeps the family up and going to their jobs, schools, meetings, events and where ever they need to be when they need to be there. Sometimes providing the transportation as a driver
13.Being the one who meets with the local community association on behalf of the family.
and the list continues.
14. Be lover and bombshell for the Husband, pretty and stern for the children.
This is a job that never pays for all the different parts a housewife plays if she were paid like a sub-contractor she'd have a seperate check for each job she does. |

ABSOLUTELY!!!! ive done both stay at home and work outside and trust me staying at home is much more work than an office ever was. think about it at home we get no day off no vacation no pay no sick pay no advancement no nothing but laundry dishes and the demands of our kids. |

umm yeah! they still do the houseWORK!~! being a mommy is work too!~! |

That depends on what you mean by "work". Gardening is work. Running a marathon is work. If you are asking whether it should be an occupation, I believe the answer is yes. |
|

that which you know not.
|
Depends is it a housewife with kids or not...with kids it is so a job, without then its more a vacation. But think of it this way if your a housewife with kids especially younger ones not in school you have to take care of the kids, clean the house, do all the errands and make meals, not to mention when the kids get sick or when the mom is sick herself...its sometimes harder than a full-time job due to it being 24 hours and on the call. |

I think it does not matter if you consider it work or not, its not going to change the actual scenario each individual housewife is in. |

Yep, It's probably more work than a person sitting behind a computer can do... |

sure... and she should be paid for the work... :D |

Yes because it is work, it is called housework isn't it. You are on call 24/7 no one respects your requests about how to maintain the home, you multi task and have to deal with people that are often disagreeable or even hate your guts You take all blame get no credit no one wants to help you no one appreciates what you do and everyone would suffer and be directly effected if you just didn't show up for work one day. To do all that and more you should not only get paid, you should be beatified |

A housewife, hmmmm I don't think so... I mean if u have no kids and all ur doing is taking care of urself and ur husband how is that work? The house can't be that much of a mess and u don't have that much laundry between 2 so what is there possibly to do all day that requires actual work?
A stay at home mom is work...a housewife is not! |

I worked outside the home for 10 years before i decided to quit my job as a dental assistant> Believe me staying home all day is ALOT more work than I thought!!! |

Yes...bloody hard work, all day and half the night too, mostly with little pay or gratitude, as you can see by some answers.....would like to see some of those office workers get down on their hands and knees and scub floor, toilets, bathrooms etc...somehow, I don't think so, but when they get home, they EXPECT it to be done, dinner ready, clothes washed and ironed just so they can walk into work next day perfectly presented with no effort from them..(but do their co-workers think it is the housewives who make them presentable...of course not, they just see, squeaky clean.)...
the saying..behind every successful man, there is a good woman...I somehow think this has been lost along the way, but is still, very much active.....work?...Hell Yes !!. |

I told my husband yesterday that a woman's job is never done. Yes it is work. But it is nice that we can do it at our own pace!.. |

It's the hardest WORK in the world especially if you have children. I stayed home for 11 years with two small boys and kept house, cooked, cleaned, entertained the children, shopped, paid bills, ... Now, I am back at "work" at it is much easier. I can actually use the bathroom when I need to ALONE! |
|

It is a type of work. For instance, if you were to pay someone to do all those tasks, it would amount to a lot of money (ie: banking, personal shopper, organizer, launderer), thus, making it a highly paying JOB. |

I thought it was. It's what I put on my tax form for yrs. Of course the pays lousy, hrs are long ( even longer when you have kids ) you need lots of skill to run a house. You taxi everyone around, clean, shop, cook, repair, make appointments, arrange everything to be done on time, Your a Dr and a Nurse, teacher, peace keeper, your an accountant and lawyer ( ever try reading some of those forms they send example- car and health insurance, loans etc etc ). You rarely get time off and there's never enough hrs in a day some days!
Is it worth it? He** Yes! |

Mopping and scrubbing toilets is hard work! It's a 24 hour job and you don't get paid for it either.
If I became a janitor it'd be a job I'd get paid very well for, so if I do it at home what's the difference? It's still work. |

Yes!!!! A housewife's work is never done. It is a 24/7 job. |

what a question in this day and age.of course it is the most important work on earth.that is why housewives get paid by governments in some countries.some husbands pay their wives who are housewives and they will have pensions in their old age just like those who worked outside the home.it is work cause" the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world". |

Hello,
If you are having issues at home why not have your other half take his/her vacation time and take over at home, all daily activities for say a week.
Then there will be no more questioning what a 24/7 no pay, or gratitude job is like.
Home makers do not get raises, do not get to stop work at 5, nor has days off.
But hey the job does end in 20 years or so......kids usually are much happier so it is worth it. |

yes because if you were to break down everything a stay at home mom or house wife does you'd realize you'd pay a fortune to have these services done! a housewife is a chauffeur, cook, maid, does the laundry |
