Do you think you will get married?

Since society has begun to move away from a religious structure, has marriage become redundant, merely a chain with which to attach yourself to another person in a false imitation of true closeness?

Been there, done that. Divorce will be final next Wednesday. I don't know if I'd ever do it again or not considering how horrible the first time was. |

I am married and have been for 34 years. What you can get from marriage is devotion, support, loyalty and love. It is not a frightening cloying state to be avoided. |

A marriage is not necessarily religiously based.
Its more like a public declaration that you and your partners have become an entity together. like two become one, kinda thing.
you complete her, she completes you.
And.. i'll leave that open to the future. Never say never. |

I've been married for 6months... and i know society has begun to move away from religious but it still gives you that security you need,, marriages have a 40% chance of fail before the first 5years, me and my wife have already needed councilling our relationship is really unstable now were are being tested with the triumph of being parents, i hope it works out because a 6month marriage will make me feel very very low. and my child does not deserve it. |

I am not sure if I will. It used to be my fantasy when I was a little girl. But I think now that I am in the real world and no longer sheltered by my parents...I am not sure I will get married. I don't want to have children either. |

A> A false imitation of true closeness < ~ You might like to think about that ~ axiomatic statement, it is also a rather Majestic Sweeping Grandiose one of a personal perception ...maybe of yours?
''Marriage'', the word itself, take a look at the meaning of it....
1: to unite intimately: Common economic interests marry the two countries.
2. to take as an intimate life partner by a formal exchange of promises in the manner of a traditional marriage ceremony.
3. to combine, connect, or join so as to make more efficient, attractive, or profitable: The latest cameras marry automatic and manual features. A recent merger marries two of the nation's largest corporations.
4. Nautical. a. to lay together (the unlaid strands of two ropes) to be spliced.
b. to seize (two ropes) together end to end for use as a single line.
c. to seize (parallel ropes) together at intervals.
5. to cause (food, liquor, etc.) to blend with other ingredients: to marry malt whiskey with grain whiskey.
By heating them until the same temperature, you can mate two pieces of metal together ~ where their cell-like structures, flow into one another and 'marry'. By dovetailing to pieces of timber, they can be fitted together needing no nails, no screws nor glue, and be as strong as if as one.
About 30 years ago, I read the suggestion raised here a few days ago, about Marriage being suggested as a Contract to be Renewed say, every three years or so.
And, just what difference would that make? What is the difference from what is now on offer to the citizens at present?
'Common Partnerships' ~ we have those already, with fractured home lives of children who without structures and role models are becoming model terrorists, feral breeding grounds who will most certainly in turn breed ...and of course, not marry and so perpetuate this ugly fractured or broken stereotype.
Marriage has become redundant ~ yes, as much as morals have ~ where the ignorant and the entertainer are idolised; where the carrying of a handbag with a label takes on a iconic status; where shopping is perceived as a 'hobby': where 'making a statement' whilst saying nothing is an easy possibility, and where ''fat'' is excused, forgiven called 'beauty' ~ to sooth the fevered brow of the fool.
I think I'll move to Mars.

Well I think if you are true friends and attracted to each other then marriage is still a valid part of our lives but other wise I have to agree with you. There is no way I will ever get married just to be in with the Jones for sure |

What do you think makes it false? Why should there not be as much 'true closeness' inside a marriage as there is outside it? If you want to debate the place for marriage in a secular society, that might be interesting but this question gives the impression you have identified issues that strike you as anomalous but have yet to think them through. It is good to challenge recieved wisdom but better if you can identify the right question. |

marriage is not a false imitation of true closeness, it is the ultimate union of two people who shares a deep bond with each other. It's something that everyone reaches for but some never achieve because they see it as you do. It is true that now a days, society has begun to move away from it, and it has become looked at as a prison with which you have locked yourself in, but it is not that at all. Divorce is too easily reached therefore causing marriage to become cheap in form.
I have been married for three years and everyday of those three years have been the most glorious days of my life. Sure we have problems, we argue, we are complete opposites, but in the end when the sun moves across the sky and sets in the west, we are both content because...there's no way to describe it. it's like when you've had that horrible day at work, you walk through the door, your husband knows you so well that with one look, he sees that you are just so pooped, he takes you by the hand pulls you into his arms and gives you the most heartfelt hug, you take a deep breath and in those wonderful arms, you know it's okay. That's like marriage, that's what people reach for but never find so they treat marriage like its cheap and describe it as a false imitation of true closeness. |

I do not think I will get married. I still have a gown in the closet from a few years back when I thought it would be divine to be a wife.
There is not one positive thing a man can give me that I cannot give myself. Even though I hate that statement, it is true.
I have never even lived with a guy. I have not dated someone for a full calendar year...even though I have children.
Back to reassessing my life! Thanks for this question. |

i agree with your statement completely.
I don't want to get married...i don't see a reason to imitate 'true closeness' when it doesn't exist imho. |
