According to the divorce decree between my mother and father, my father has to pay for my college. I am 22 and have just transferred to a good school but my father refuses to pay for it. He also did not pay for the community college units or books. Should I contact an attorney?

I'm no lawyer but I think it would be wise for you and your mom to contact a lawyer about this. I mean as another poster said you are an adult now and that decree was likely made before you became an adult. But now that you are an adult he may not have to cover your college expenses. But I would still check to be sure about this. Cause college can be pretty darn expensive and getting some help for it, would be great. If not you can still look up scholarships and loans to help you all the same. But yea, definitely find out what you can about your dad helping you as it is not cool that he would be trying to get off from keeping his promise just because he and your mom are divorcing. I mean something like this could drive a wedge between the two of you from now and into the future. |

actually it depends on when the decree was drawn up.
some states will VOID the part of a divorce decree that includes college agreements if it was drafted after they changed laws saying this is not legally binding.
so it actually matters on what state, and when, and other factors. you didn't give enough info for anyone here to be able to really help. |

Call him and ask him to do it it. He may not have the means. You could take it to court but that would ruin any relationship with him. Comminication is better |

Check the decree for any time limits for the payments. Typically once a child reaches a certain age payments for things are generally no longer required. If the decree states what you've said, talk to your mother and contact an attorney for advice and potential recompense of your money. |

Yes he has to pay it if it is in the decree. The divorce decree is a legally binding contract he has to abide by. |
