Has marriage become a joke?

Has marriage become a joke?

As little as 50 years ago marriage was seen as something special and sacred. The milestone that marked the pinnacle in everyone's life.

Now people get married for the wrong reasons: Money, looks, lust, just for the sheer hell of it. Rarely legitimate love anymore.

Divorce used to be a deviance, something to be ashamed of. Now it's as norm.

I think the problem with marriage is that people find it easier to walk way then to deal with the problems they are having. 50 years ago there was a stigma that went with being divorced - today it has become the norm. Marriage is easy to get into and maybe that is the problem. Some churches make you go through a form of counselling before they will marry you.

Don't you think it's strange that when you get married now you have to wait 3 to 6 months if you want to change your name? That is because of the backlog created from one in two marriages ending in divorce. It's sad really.

What has become a joke is what people consider commitment. People walk out on everything from children to jobs. Society today doesn't make the same effort of upholding morals and values. I do still believe that marriage can work - my grandparents are almost ready to celebrate their 60th anniversary now and they are best friends.

There will always be people who get married for the wrong reasons. And there will always be people getting married for the right ones. I personally could care less how the rest of the world feels about marriage. All that matters is that we are happy in ours, and that is no joke. :)

My fiance and I are deeply in love and we don't believe in divorce. It's not a joke to us, we don't understand why people take marriage so lightly... I'm sure there are other couples like us out there.

OMG!! You couldn't have worded it better. Marriage is such a joke today and it's so irritating. Me and my fiance have been together 5 years and we vow to never divorce. My great grandmother and great grandfather were together 50+ years. We believe that it can still be done!

Yes, and a bad one at that........I never realized that infidelity on both sides of the fence, was so rampant....Not 'til I came to Y M/D. Sad, sad state of affairs.

I agree with you 100%. Marriage means commitment for life. I was being mislead into that as well right now. My husband and i have only been married over a year, we have a baby, 7 months ago he left me and told me not ever come back, this is my first marriage, but for my husband is the 3rd. I tried so hard, counseling, coffession to priests thinking it was al my fault and really want to fix our marriage. he blame on me everything... I was down with depression for many months.. Just recently he told me that he never had feelings for me from the beginning of our relationship, then i found out that he had someone the past 7 months... He was marrying me for pity. How can a man do that when before he potrays me as a good man that believes in god and believes in till death do us apart. swearing to god that never gets divorce if not thunder will strike him and all.. So many people just don
t believe in marriage for life time... Take it so easy and not even thinking about people and children that will be effecting and as victims.
People should have education about marriage and really take it seriously.. It is a sad thing.. I was hoping to raised my baby together with him.. I felt so cheated, worse is when his friend told me to move on and get on with life, and tell me forget about trying and all.. How am i supposed to know..? my husband could have stop the relations long time before we got married.. not waited till the baby was born.. It is so evil...

Sad, but true. The worst thing is that the gov't. tends to make laws that support singles living together, rather than them getting married 1st. Two people on disability, for example, can have their checks reduced if they get married -- but there's no penalty if they simply live together. ~;/>

No. Marriage is not a joke. People don't know how to love each other BC they learned the wrong way from their parents (divorced or married). People do not know what falling in love really is. People mistake lust & infatuation for chemistry. Looks matter more than respect, kindness and admiration. As soon as people see EACH OTHER as special and sacred, marriage will be a true, lasting and PERMANENT bond.

WOWZA!
Yep, I agree....I totally agree, but I'm 25 and I have a divorce under my belt..He cheated on me. 50 years ago people didn't get caught. Now people get caught more.

Especially when we are always telling married folk on YA to walk away, move on, run don't walk from the marriage, etc.<>
My husband cheated on me and I was told by many to leave. I decided to give my marriage a try which was really a fantastic marriage up to the discovery of infidelity. It is a tough road and long and hard journey that I am prepared to make. Marriage is not always a rainbow, sometimes the clouds rain down on you but you have to be strong enough to hold on to that umbrella. I hope I am not wasting my time but I am grateful that love is so far helping us to win this battle.<>

Unfortunately......especially in LaLa Land -- "oops" - hollyweird....

There does not seem to be any respect at all for marriage in society
and can you imagine all the children being born OUT of wedlock now,
who probably grow up thinking that it's no big deal, even if they have several half-brothers and half-sisters...and they can end up doing the exact same thing when they come of age.....
and for those who DON'T get married for the right reasons get divorced
when marriage becomes an INCONVENIENCE to them....It's a wonder
if some couples stay together, faithfully, for even a couple of years....
...They think they're doing something....Hopefully, they don't bring any
children into such marriages, which is totally unfair to the children who
get caught up in the middle............

Las Vegas and Reno make a farce out of marriage...and then when the husband or wife "gets tired" of being married or they don't get their
own way about something, it's back to Reno or wherever for a "quicky"
divorce....

Look at Scott Peterson....He didn't want to be tied down with a wife and baby, so he killed his pregnant wife and left her in a bag in the Pacific Ocean...and this other guy, Drew Peterson, the former police officer, who most likely killed his fourth wife....not to mention his third
wife in order to be with the fourth wife...or was it insurance money..or both....and I heard he had someone new...????

It should be ALOT harder to get married AND divorced and maybe some people would put more deliberate thought into what they are doing instead of treating it like some passing and selfish diversion in life....Everything seems directed at getting one's own needs met...and when they don't....forget the marriage, forget any kind
of committment...They're out of here....

EDIT.... It is so good to see others on here who also believe the same and who DO have respect for marriage and what it is MEANT to be......We might be in the minority, but it is still the RIGHT minority..... :-)

Even without my Christian faith, I would STILL believe in what
marriage is supposed to be. I always have. I still believe in being faithful and "Til Death Do Us Part"...and "Love, Honour, and Cherish...."

The media and hollywood, et al, don't have any respect for traditional values and absolute morality...After all, that is too
"Intolerant" and "Divisive" and "Judgmental" to those who are
happy to fall in line with the secular progressive p.c. crowd...
