A month ago my bf of 2 yrs brought up marriage; I told him I wasn't ready, he said I shot him down. Things were really rocky after that, and last weekend we broke up because he's been getting more and more distant, yet he says I changed. I told him I did want to marry him, I just wanted to get some things worked out (he has a seasonal job in which he is gone half the year and is not in school and doesn't know what he wants to do permanently; this concerns me because i have loaned him $4,000 in 2 months). He took it as a blow to his ego and started partying all the time, said I'm not crazy enough, all I care about is money, etc. When this is obviously not true or I wouldnt' be with him and paying his bills; I just want to make sure we are stable and I'm not doing all the work.
Now he is calling me every day, asking why we broke up (he did it!), says he still loves me, and hasn't once brought up me being "not crazy enough" again. I don't know what to do. He keeps saying he wants to get back together but has made no move to do so. I don't want to beat the topic to death again, but I know we have a limited window of opportunity to get back together before we drift apart. Should I let him take control or should I bring it up?

Before you do anything, I think you need to figure out whether you want him back - although personally, I think the real question is "why." He's not bringing up you not being "crazy enough" now because he wants you back, but you have no guarantee once you do get back together that he's not going to fall straight back into old habits. (Heck, maybe he wants you back because he needs a loan again.) If you do decide to give him another shot, find out whether he's really on the right track toward preparing for marriage before you recommit. |
