Help my son has separation anxiety?

Hi! My son is 3yrs and 4 months old. He will be starting preschool this August. Everytime I mention this to him he starts screaming "No, No, No, I don't wanna go to school, I wanna be with you!" Then he starts cyring and screaming. I thought the more I talk about it with him, he will start being comfortable with it. I can imagine the first day. I told him that he needs to go to school so that I can get a job just like his daddy. Then he would scream again. What should I do?

You may want to try putting him in daycare an hour or two at a time. Get him used to being around a lot of kids his age. I went into headstart when I was his age, and my mom asked the teachers if she could be there during the days with me to help me adjust. So my first year she was there with me, and she was basically an assistant to the teachers. She made sure not to be right next to me all day, so I could do everything on my own. That helped me to make friends and get used to the whole school thing. It was easier too because when I went to kindergarten, I knew I would have friends there. Teachers really like it when the parents get involved and help out. |

God does everything have to have a label these days? "Separation anxiety"? Is there even such a thing? Maybe he's a little too spoiled. |

Comfort him and make sure he knows that you are not abandoning them. Parents worry about this too much.. It is very sad to see them go through that, but they will never ever remember this in adulthood |

Has he visited the preschool that he will be attending. Maybe if he goes to the preschool and sees how it is and you explain/show him how things are going to happen when he starts his first day then maybe that will help with the separation. Also, this is typical for his age group they will cry when you leave but at the school they should know how to deal with that by engaging him in activities and such to where he is fine and continues his day. After a while he will adjust and then he won't want to leave when you pick him up. I hope this helps this is how it was with my younger bro when my mom would drop him off to preschool. |

honestly it will be fine my son did the same thing and yes for 2 weeks i had to leave him with a teacher screaming while i ran out the door but everytime i went to pick him up from school i would look through the window and he would either be playing with other kids or singing in a circle he will love it my son now moans when its the holidays because he wants to see his friends he is 4 in may so it did not take him long to adjust. x |

What you can do is talk to the teachers. They can help you help him adjust. |

I am going through that right now. Thankfully, the director of the school is a child psychiatrist/psychologist and assures me that the behavior is normal and ALL children go through it, and for some it lasts longer than for others. I give my daughter a "special" doll that she can only have in school so she can have it when she misses me. It is such a difficult transition to make, think about it his life revolves around you. It will just take some time. |
