So my girlfriend broke up with me about 2 months ago. We were together for 5 years and lived together for just over 4 of those years. She broke up with me cause she said she wasnt in love with me anymore but she still loved me. And that she wanted to stand on her own feet to see if she can cause i always took care of her. Fine i get that we arent living together anymore but we still talk alot and hang out when we can. Recently she told me that she had been talking to an old crush she had but nothing happened and its over. I dont know what to do in this situation. i want to let her find her independence and stand on her own feet but i feel that it not just that she wants . See i was her first everything ( ecept crush ) And ive been feeling that maybe she was feeling left out of things like being with other boys ect. I dont know whats going on, I just know things were really hard towards the end money, job, college everything was out of wack and we fought alot til the end. Then we were cool and acted as friends and still are now but Should i wait around to see what happen or move on i dont know what to do. All i know is i cant stand the thought of her being with another guy or having to stand back as a friend while she dates- fall in love with someone else. Any advice would be nice thanks .
P.S. I am 25 she is 21 if that helps

I met my husband when I was 16 and he was 21. He propsed to me when I was 18 and 2 months later we moved in together. Before I met him I only dated 2 other guys. So all these years my husband has always thought he stole me away too early. Meaning, I didn't get to live on my own. I went right from my parents house into living with my husband. I didn't get to date other men outside of highschool. I didn't experiance the adult life alone..paying bills, keeping a roof over my head alone.
Before I met my husband, he was in the Army for 3yrs and dated more then I did. So he had the independence before we moved in together.
Sometimes my husband and I think about what it would have been like if I lived on my own for one year before us moving in together. However back then, if I got my own apt, I would be at his place or he would be at place more often, that we might as well be living together.
I am happy how my life is. I wouldn't change it. My husband was deployed for a year to Iraq. So I got to experiance the independence and missing him like crazy.
It's now 11yrs later from when we first met and I wouldn't change a thing.
With your situation, your gf is already dating, so it's time for you to move on as well. Maybe in the end, after you both are done dating other people, you can meet in the middle and start a life together again. Right now I feel she is using you. I understand she wants her independence, but she is also keeping you around as a side salad. Nothing wrong with being friends, but don't let her have all the control while she gains her independence. |

So she's been with you since age 16 and living together since age 17? Yes, she probably does want to try being independent, try something different. As to whether it's permanently over or not - you have to ask her. If she's stringing you along don't stand for it, just arrange to meet her one day and ask her clearly what she wants, and what her intentions are. Say you can't wait for ever for her to figure out if she wants you or not. |

I think you both need to experience life without the other. Considering how long you've been together and how old you are, you should go out and date other people. I can't speak for men, but as a woman, I did a lot changing from 21 to 25. Just trying to figure out what career path, hanging out with friends being crazy, women really become molded into who they are going to become between these ages. I can understand the hurt of the idea of her being with someone else. If she were to stay in the relationship it would only be a matter of time before she would still come to the same point. You should not wait around, go on with your life, it will only hurt you more to wait around. |
