How long does one need to wait after a divorce to remarry in VA?

I heard I may have to wait a year after I get a divorce, in the state of VA, to remarry. I've been separated for almost 4 years, and moved on with my life, my divorce is going to be final soon, and I just wanted to know how long before my boyfriend and I can marry.

The day your divorce is final (i'ts stamped on the papers) you are a single person. How long you were separated is immaterial.
You can marry the next day. |

VA does not have a required waiting period after divorce like some states. Since there is no waiting period you can legally remarry as soon as you receive the final divorce decree by mail, this decree states you're legally divorced. Marrying before this time would be illegal, and make your second marriage null & void. |

After my ex husband and I separated I moved on with my life and met someone else. I got pregnant when I was still legally married. When it came to the actual divorce his lawyer wanted to get it done before I gave birth which would of been 1-2 months. Of course I waited until my son was born. But right after the papers are signed you should be able to get married again if that's what you want. If you have a lawyer he would be able to tell you. |
