I'm divorced and have a just that is just over 3. He spends more time with me than his mom and I do take him out to play almost daily.
However, since 4 months ago he started preferring being with his mom more and now cries when has to come to me, refuses phone conversation with me and says simply loves his mum more.
Fine, due to my work schedule maybe she plays more with him and there is his 4 years old cousin in his mom's household and my son loves to play.
My son does enjoy when I take him to playground, play ball with him, the zoo etc....but even then he sometimes asks when will he go to mommy. Once there, it is hard to bring him here and is angry for 5-10 minutes after gets here from his mom.
So, how long can this separation anxiety last.

Depends on the child. Kids don't come with instruction sheets. He is at the perfect age for it and hopefully, this will pass.
Don't give in, don't change your plans to suit his anxiety. He needs to learn that life is not always just the way you want it. And don't give up either. Keep doing what you are doing.
You could try talking to him about how sad it makes you when he won't talk to you on the phone and so forth. Keep it short and simple. At 3, it's hard to tell how much he'll actually get the drift. Some kids will get it 100%, some 10% for the next 10 minutes and forget it after that.
It's a stage, remember that. It really doesn't have a true reflection on how he feels about you. He is a little boy and little boys are incredibly self centered. Mommy is part of that universe. Just the way it is. |
